An EGR malfunction detection system includes an EGR valve configured to open and close an exhaust recirculation path for recirculating an exhaust gas from an exhaust channel to an intake channel of an engine, a measurement unit configured to measure an intake pressure inside the intake channel, a valve controller configured to control the EGR valve, and a malfunction detector configured to detect an anomaly in the exhaust recirculation path in accordance with a measurement unit output and a valve controller output. The malfunction detector determines whether the EGR valve is stuck in accordance with the intake pressures measured when the EGR valve is controlled to open and close. If the EGR valve is stuck, the malfunction detector determines whether the EGR valve is stuck in an open state, stuck in a closed state, or stuck in an intermediate state by comparing the measured pressure with predetermined thresholds.

Heat exchanger cleaning system and method

A heat exchanger cleaning system (HECS) includes an engine having an intake conduit and an exhaust port, and an EGR cooler having a cooler inlet in fluid communication with the engine exhaust port, a cooler outlet in fluid communication with the engine intake conduit, and an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve disposed between the engine exhaust port and the EGR cooler. A first pressure sensor is disposed between the engine exhaust port and the EGR valve, and a second pressure sensor disposed in the engine intake conduit. A controller is in electrical communication with the EGR valve, the first pressure sensor, and the second pressure sensor. The controller is configured to implement a predetermined set of operating parameters for the engine and/or the EGR valve, wherein implementation of the predetermined set of operating parameters causes an increased flow velocity of exhaust gas through the EGR cooler.

A sieve seal as a component embodied of one piece, consisting of a seal, which holds a sieve body so that it is enclosed over an inner free cross-sectional area. The present invention also relates to a method for sustained operation of a sieve seal of this kind. In order to provide a remedy in the event of a clogging and/or soot formation and an accumulation of deposits in the sieve seal, it is proposed that the sieve body is embodied for an electric current to flow through at least part of it in such a way that a temperature that is sufficient to eliminate at least significant parts of the deposits is achieved or a corresponding temperature threshold is exceeded.
