SADDLE-RIDING TYPE VEHICLE

A saddle-riding type vehicle includes an automatic clutch mechanism configured to be activated by an actuator which enables a push start to be executed, so that even when a charged capacity of a battery is reduced, an engine can be started. A control unit of the vehicle proceeds to a push start control mode when an engine stopped state detection portion detects a stopped state of an engine, a vehicle stopped state detection portion detects a stopped state of the saddle-riding type vehicle, and a gear selected state detection portion detects a state in which any one of gears of a transmission is selected. In the push start control mode, the control unit applies a clutch to start the engine when a vehicle speed detection portion detects a predetermined vehicle speed or faster, and a cutoff switch state detection portion detects a change in state of a cutoff switch.

METHOD FOR OPERATING AN AUTOMATIC START/STOP SYSTEM IN A VEHICLE UTILIZING A TORQUE CONVERTER

A system and method for operating an automatic start/stop system in a motor vehicle having an internal combustion engine, an automatic transmission and a torque converter with an impeller disconnect clutch is disclosed. A controller may implement an engine start/stop system by, at appropriate times, stopping engine by halting fuel and restarting engine when propulsion is needed. During an engine start/stop event, the engine is automatically shut down and the impeller clutch of the torque converter may be disengaged to decouple the impeller and the engine to provide for fuel and emissions savings.

A vehicle, system, and method provide determining whether a thermal risk exists for an occupant of a passenger compartment of a vehicle based on: identifying, via the temperature sensor, that the temperature within the passenger compartment is outside of a safe temperature range, identifying, via an electronic control module, that an engine of the vehicle is not running, and identifying, via the occupant sensor, that an occupant is in the passenger compartment. In response to determining that the thermal risk exists, a controller starts starting the engine via an ignition locking system, closes power-actuated windows of the passenger compartment, locks power-locked doors of the passenger compartment, and activates a heating, ventilation and air conditioning system of the vehicle via a climate control unit. The HVAC maintains the temperature of the passenger compartment within the safe temperature range to safeguard the occupant until return of a responsible party.

Systems and methods for managing engine stop-start

An apparatus includes a route circuit and a stop-start circuit. The route circuit is structured to estimate a number of charging locations for an energy storage system of a vehicle for a planned route. The stop-start circuit is structured to determine a stop-start strategy for an engine of the vehicle based on the estimated number of charging locations and expected charges to be received by the energy storage system. The stop-start strategy defines a frequency and duration of using the engine in an on-mode during operation of the vehicle along the planned route. The stop-start circuit is further structured to determine that the energy storage system fails to receive an expected charge at one of the charging locations, and update the stop-start strategy to compensate for failing to receive the expected charge by increasing use of the engine in the on-mode during operation of the vehicle along the planned route.

Method and system for producing an active short circuit condition in an electric motor of a hybrid electric vehicle
11332029 · 2022-05-17 · ·

A method for producing an active short circuit condition in an electric motor of a hybrid electric vehicle including a traction battery, an inverter having switches in communication with the electric motor and the traction battery, and an inverter controller in communication with the inverter and configured to generate driver signals to operate the switches to produce three-phase alternating current for the electric motor to drive a vehicle propulsion system or to produce direct current for charging the traction battery. The method includes determining an electric motor speed threshold, wherein the electric motor speed threshold is continuously variable, comparing a monitored speed to the speed threshold, and generating, in response to the monitored speed exceeding the speed threshold, driver signals to operate the switches to produce an active short circuit condition in the electric motor to prevent overcharging of the traction battery.

Systems and methods for determining whether to use engine start-stop systems during trail or other off-road driving are provided. Systems and methods may utilize various vehicle sensors (e.g., lidar, forward-facing cameras, accelerometers, sonar sensors, etc.) to detect when it is appropriate to command engine stop for fuel economy while driving off-road. To determine appropriateness, the vehicle may evaluate obstacles, ground clearance, and/or vehicle inclination. A method may include measuring accelerations/inclinations of a vehicle, comparing an acceleration value of each acceleration to an acceleration threshold, and disabling a start-stop system of the vehicle based on at least one acceleration value exceeding the acceleration threshold. A system may include an accelerometer configured to measure accelerations of a vehicle, and a logic device configured to compare an acceleration value of each acceleration to an acceleration threshold, and disable a start-stop system based on at least one acceleration value exceeding the acceleration threshold.

In some implementations, a controller may determine whether a machine is operating in an autonomous mode or a manual mode. The controller may cause, based on a determination that the machine has been in an idle state for a first timer period, shutdown of an engine of the machine. The controller may monitor, based on a determination that the machine is operating in the autonomous mode, whether a condition for starting the engine is satisfied. The controller may cause, based on a determination that the engine has been shut down for a second timer period and that the condition is not satisfied, the machine to transition to a low power mode. The controller may cause, when the condition is satisfied, starting of the engine.
