Ignition coil

This ignition coil includes: a bar-shaped resistor electrically connected to a terminal of a coil assembly via a relay; a case for storing these; and a filler filling gaps inside the case. The case includes a body, a cylindrical output portion protruding from the body, and an annular holding portion protruding inward from an inner circumferential surface of the output portion and formed integrally with the output portion. A part of the resistor is inserted into the holding portion, and thus a first internal area located on the body side with respect to the holding portion and shut off from outside is formed in an internal area of the output portion. The filler fills the first internal area.

The present invention relates to a spark plug extension body connecting an ignition coil with a spark plug for a spark ignited internal combustion engine, as well as a method for providing such a spark plug extension body for reduction of partial electrical discharges in the spark plug extension body. In conventional spark plug extensions are coil springs used as electrical conductor against the spark plug terminal and/or ignition coil terminal. These coil springs cause Corona effects and short circuiting requiring replacement of the spark plug extension. With the invention the entire electrical conductor (CR.sub.u, 64, CR.sub.L) is in a rod like form and at least both ends (CR.sub.u, CR.sub.L) of the electrical conductor (CR.sub.u, 64, CR.sub.L) are made as a monolith in a flexible and electrically conducting polymeric material, preferably electrically conducting rubber.

An ignition coil includes a coil unit, a hollow cylindrical joint, and a spring. The joint couples the coil unit with a spark plug. The spring is inserted into a through-hole in the joint to electrically connect the coil unit and the spark plug together. The joint has electrical insulation and rubber elasticity. The spring includes a spring base section, a spring head section, and a spring intermediate section lying between the spring base and head sections. The joint has an inner peripheral surface placed in direct contact with the spring intermediate section in a radial direction of the joint. The spring intermediate section is wound more densely than each of the spring base section and the spring head section in a condition where the spring is subjected to no load. This structure serves to minimize a risk of generation of a corona discharge in the ignition coil and an ignition device equipped with the ignition coil and improve the productivity thereof.
