A vacuum pump system includes an air-cooled, O-ring sealed vacuum pump and an oil management system with an LED illuminated clear tank for observation of the oil condition as well as a large oil inlet and outlet for rapid and safe oil changes while the pump is operating. The oil management system is also configured to prevent oil from the sump from being drawn into an evacuated AC/R system when the pump is stopped and the intake ports are not sealed from the high vacuum AC/R system. The oil management system includes a preferential vacuum relief system that allows air instead of the oil from the sump to be drawn back into the evacuated lines.

The gas ballast assembly 330 comprises a gas ballast passage fluidly connected to a stator chamber 212 of the pump 300, a gas ballast valve 334 configured to selectively open and close the gas ballast passage depending on the relative gas pressure across the valve 334, and a gas ballast buffer chamber 360 fluidly connected to the gas ballast passage upstream of the gas ballast valve 343, which is in selective fluid communication with the exterior of the pump 300 (300). The present disclosure also provides a related method of communicating ballast gas to a rotary vane vacuum pump 300 (300).

A pump includes a housing that contains a liquid, and a rotor including a plurality of blades extending radially from a shaft, and defining a conical space. A port member is disposed within the conical space. The port member defines an inlet port in communication with a low pressure region, a discharge port in communication with a high pressure region, and an anti-cavitation port in communication with a fluid supply having a pressure between the low and the high pressure regions. Each pair of adjacent blades cooperates with the liquid and the port member to enclose a variable volume bucket, wherein rotation of the rotor selectively positions a bucket in an inlet position adjacent the inlet port to draw in fluid, in an anti-cavitation position wherein the bucket is adjacent the anti-cavitation port and fluid is admitted into the bucket, and a discharge position wherein the bucket is positioned adjacent the discharge port to discharge fluid.
