A gas turbine engine starter system includes an engine starter with a starter torque output configured to convey a starter torque to a gas turbine engine. An engine startup process includes a spool-up time interval in which the engine rotational speed increases to a speed within an engine starting speed envelope. During at least a portion of the spool-up time interval, the starter torque is less than a speed-dependent maximum torque value of the starter torque that the engine starter is configured to produce. A method of operating a gas turbine engine starter system includes operating an engine starter to accelerate the gas turbine engine such that the starter torque is less than a speed-dependent maximum torque value of the starter torque that the engine starter is configured to produce during at least a portion of a spool-up time interval.

A method and system for bleed flow power generation is provided. The engine includes a core flowpath formed by a compressor section, a heat addition system, and an expansion section in serial flow arrangement. A bleed circuit is extended from the core flowpath to extract a portion of compressed fluid from the core flowpath. The method and system include bleeding compressed fluid through a bleed circuit extended in fluid communication from the core flowpath of the engine; flowing the compressed fluid through the bleed circuit to a turbine rotor positioned at the bleed circuit; extracting, via the turbine rotor, energy from the flow of compressed fluid across the turbine rotor; and receiving energy at an electric machine operably coupled to the turbine rotor.

In a one embodiment, a gas turbine system that includes a first pump that supplies distillate fuel to a combustor. A second pump that supplies fuel oil to the combustor. A fuel selection unit that controls a first flow of distillate fuel and a second flow of fuel oil to the combustor. A controller that receives feedback from a sensor and in response to the feedback from the sensor controls the fuel selection unit to start the gas turbine system on the fuel oil.

At least one engine parameter is measured in real-time during the motoring, the at least one engine parameter comprising a temperature of the engine. The initial motoring duration and the initial motoring interval are modified in real-time, based on a value of the at least one engine parameter during the motoring, to obtain a modified motoring duration and a modified motoring interval. The motoring continues for the modified motoring duration and at the modified motoring interval, with a speed of rotation of the engine being controlled using the modified motoring interval.

SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR CONTROLLING FUEL FLOW TO AN AIRCRAFT ENGINE DURING START

A method and system for controlling fuel flow to an aircraft engine during start are provided. Following light-off, an actual value of at least one engine operating parameter is obtained. Based on a difference between the actual value and a target value, a first command is generated to cause fuel flow to be provided to the engine's combustor according to a computed fuel flow rate defined by a fuel schedule of the engine. When the computed fuel flow rate is within a fuel flow rate limit, the first command is output. Otherwise, a limiting factor is applied to the computed fuel flow rate to limit a reduction in fuel flow to the combustor and a limited fuel flow rate is obtained, and a second command is output to cause fuel flow to be provided to the combustor according to the limited fuel flow rate.
