A self-sealing fastener for reducing leaks between the self-sealing fastener and a substrate. The self-sealing fastener includes a shank that extends longitudinally between a first end and a second end. The shank has an outer surface. The self-sealing fastener also includes a head that extends radially outwardly from the first end of the shank. The head has an underside surface that is adjacent to the first end of the shank and a topside surface opposite the underside surface. A mastic sealant is disposed on at least one of the outer surface of the shank and the underside surface of the head to provide a water-tight seal between the self-sealing fastener and the substrate after the self-sealing fastener is installed in the substrate.

A grommet (200, 300, 400), a stud (102), an assembly of a grommet and a stud forming a fastener (100), and a method of assembling a grommet and a stud to form a fastener has the grommet with an interengaging element (250) in a channel wall of the grommet for engaging a cooperating, compatible or complementary interengaging element in a wall of the stud. The grommet and the stud can be assembled by moving the grommet and the stud relative to each other until the interengaging element in the grommet engages the complementary interengaging element in the stud. A family of grommets is described.

Embodiments described herein provide a fastening device such as a nail or staple having at least one projection each extending away from the body at an angle and away from a tip of the body. For example, in the case of a nail, there can be two or more projections extending from the elongated member of the nail each at a substantially equal distance from the head and/or along the length of the elongated member each spaced at substantially equal distances apart. In the case of a staple, there can be at least one projection connected to the interior surface of a first leg of the staple, that surface being substantially opposite to an interior surface of a second leg of the staple. The tip can be sharp or not sharp. The projections can be connected to exterior surfaces of the staple's legs.

Fencing staple

A barbed staple for installing fencing wire onto a fence post. The staple has a crown section and a leg section. The crown section has an arcuate crown portion and a radiused portion, and the leg section has a pair of leg portions that extend in parallel from the radiused portion of the crown section. At least one barb protrudes from each of the leg portions, the barb having projecting points. The distance between the distal edge of the projecting points defines an outer leg width. The crown portion of the crown section has a greater width than the pair of leg portions in parallel. The outer crown width is greater than the outer leg width.
