A system and modular compressor for raising the pressure in production gas is disclosed, wherein in a set of compressor modules each second module is a rotor module carrying an impeller driven in rotation relative to an adjacent stationary module, a rotor module and a stationary module in combination providing a compressor stage in which production gas is accelerated through a flow duct that passes an interface between the rotor module and the stationary module, wherein at the interface at least one bearing for axial and/or radial load is provided for journaling the rotor module on the stationary module. The at least one bearing is a gas bearing, wherein a passage is arranged in the stationary module to lead an extracted portion of production gas at raised pressure from the compressor to the gas bearing(s).

A rotary machine includes a rotary shaft with an axial disc; an axial magnetic bearing which supports the rotary shaft; a motor which rotates the rotary shaft; a turbine impeller mounted on one end portion of the rotary shaft; a compressor impeller mounted on the other end portion; a cooling gas flow passage where a cooling gas for cooling the motor flows; and a housing for at least the motor, the axial magnetic bearing, and the axial disc. The motor includes a rotor unit on the rotary shaft, and a stator unit facing the rotor unit, the axial disc is equipped with a pair of load receiving surfaces sandwiched between the axial magnetic bearings, and the cooling gas flow passage is equipped with a first flow passage between the rotor unit and the stator unit, and a second flow passage extending along at least one of the load receiving surface.

A fluid rotor is configured to move or be rotated by a working fluid. A fluid stator surrounds the fluid rotor. The fluid stator is spaced from the fluid rotor and defines a first annular fluid gap in-between that is in fluid communication with an outside environment exterior the downhole-type pump. A radial magnetic bearing includes a first portion coupled to the fluid rotor and a second portion coupled to the fluid stator. The first portion is spaced from the second portion defining a second annular fluid gap in-between that is in fluid communication with the outside environment exterior the downhole-type pump.

A system to provide power to a downhole-type tool includes a downhole-type electric motor that can be positioned in a wellbore and a variable speed drive electrically connected to the electric motor, in which the downhole-type electric motor can operate at rotary speeds of at least 6,000 rotations per minute (rpm), the variable speed drive can control and supply power to the electric motor when the electric motor is positioned at a downhole location inside the wellbore, and the variable speed drive can be at a surface of the wellbore.
