Belt tensioner

A belt tensioner for an engine accessory drive is installed over a pulley such that rollers extend toward the engine. Due the belt being between the tensioner and the engine, installation of the belt on the pulley is difficult. To simplify installation, a removable belt guide is included in the belt tensioner. Two methods of installing the belt and tensioner are envisioned. In a first method, the belt is first installed on the pulley and the belt guide holds the belt toward the pulley radially as the tensioner is installed over the pulley. In a second method, the belt is first installed to the tensioner and the guide holds the belt radially away from the pulley as the tensioner is installed over the pulley. In both methods, the belt guide is removed after the belt and tensioner are installed.

A clutch includes first and second sheaves, the first sheave including a housing with a slot. A bar is inserted within the slot and a bolt engaged with a threaded opening in the bar and tensioned such that it presses against the second sheave forcing it outwardly against a biasing force. The bar may include two end portions with different widths for two different types of clutches, each end portion including a threaded opening. The clutch may include a slider mounted to the second sheave and positioned with the slot. The bar may include a recess on a bottom surface providing clearance for the slider.

Tensioner and method

A tensioner comprising a base defining a hole, the hole having a center C, the hole having a diameter sufficient to receive a driven pulley, a rotary arm engaged with the base by a retaining member connected to the base, the rotary arm rotatable about the center C, a pivot arm mounted to the rotary arm on a pivot, the pivot offset from center C, a first pulley journalled to the rotary arm, a second pulley journalled to the pivot arm, a torsion spring engaged between the rotary arm and the pivot arm for biasing the second pulley toward the first pulley, a damping member frictionally engaged between the base and the rotary arm, and the rotary arm defining a portion for receiving a first pulley fastener whereby a first pulley position is adjustable.

Tensioner and method

A tensioner comprising a base defining a hole, the hole having a center C, the hole having a diameter sufficient to receive a driven pulley, a rotary arm engaged with the base by a retaining member connected to the base, the rotary arm rotatable about the center C, a pivot arm mounted to the rotary arm on a pivot, the pivot offset from center C, a first pulley journalled to the rotary arm, a second pulley journalled to the pivot arm, a torsion spring engaged between the rotary arm and the pivot arm for biasing the second pulley toward the first pulley, a damping member frictionally engaged between the base and the rotary arm, and the rotary arm defining a portion for receiving a first pulley fastener whereby a first pulley position is adjustable.

Tool for installation and removal of a stretch fit belt on a marine engine

A tool for installing and removing a stretch fit belt on a marine engine pulley includes a body having first and second ends, an inner face located adjacent an outer surface of the pulley, and an outer face guiding the belt. A rib on the inner face contacts a pulley groove. A wedge protrudes from a lower portion of the outer face near the body's first end and slopes downwardly from a wedge upper corner to a wedge lower corner located between the body's first and second ends. An overhang protrudes from an upper portion of the outer face near the body's second end and has a curved portion located between the body's first and second ends and a tapered portion extending from the curved portion to the body's second end. The tool is dimensioned to accommodate a width or a thickness of the belt during installation or removal thereof.

A tool for installing and removing a stretch fit belt on a marine engine pulley includes a body having first and second ends, an inner face located adjacent an outer surface of the pulley, and an outer face guiding the belt. A rib on the inner face contacts a pulley groove. A wedge protrudes from a lower portion of the outer face near the body's first end and slopes downwardly from a wedge upper corner to a wedge lower corner located between the body's first and second ends. With the apparatus according to embodiments of the present disclosure, a flexible ring-shaped workpiece such as a belt can be automatically assembled by a robot to various devices.
