A continuously variable transmission includes a primary pulley, a secondary pulley, a metal belt wound around the primary pulley and the secondary pulley, and a controller. The metal belt includes a ring and a plurality of elements. The elements have respective receiving portions opening in a radial direction of the belt and receive the ring in the receiving portions. The controller executes a preliminary determined falling-off countermeasure control of the element when the end play larger than the predetermined length is detected to be generated or the continuously variable transmission is detected to be under the operation condition in which the end plays concentrate.

For example, compared to using a relationship for determining gear stage switching between a gear stage on the higher side and the intermediate gear stage, it is possible to execute gear stage switching between a gear stage on the lower side and a gear stage on the higher side in a low vehicle speed region. Therefore, it is possible to suppress the influence on vehicle behavior.

HYDRAULIC CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR VEHICLE POWER TRANSMISSION DEVICE
Ground wires are shared between a drive-side pulley solenoid valve and a driven-side pulley solenoid valve. Therefore, when a disconnection or short circuit occurs in the shared portion, a drive-side pulley and a driven-side pulley show substantially the same behavior. As a result, changes in the speed ratio γcvt of a continuously variable transmission are suppressed and changes in vehicle behavior are also suppressed. Therefore, it is possible to suppress the degradation of drivability during the failure of the solenoid valves involved in power transmission.

METHODS OF FAULT DETECTION FOR SOLENOID VALVES
This invention provides two methods for detecting mechanical or electrical faults in a solenoid valve. In the first method, a force sensor is placed in the valve in such a way as to detect changes in the impact force of the plunger against the solenoid valve body or coil housing (depending upon the direction of movement of the plunger upon application of the electric current/magnetic field). A second method is provided which makes use of an accelerometer placed in such a way as to detect changes in the response of the plunger to the application of the magnetic field.
