A mechanical seal assembly adapted for arrangement around a rotating shaft of a pump has first and second seals. Both include primary and mating rings, biasing mechanisms and annular flexible sealing membranes. The two seals can have different seal balances or different biasing forces (or both) to allow the second seal to run dry for extended periods.

Non-collapsible flexible sealing membrane and seal assembly for rotary shaft equipment

A non-collapsible flexible sealing membrane (or bellows) for incorporation in a mechanical seal assembly and use in rotary shaft equipment. The sealing membrane includes a substantially radially outward extending first flange portion, which can be urged into an axially shiftable ring by a biasing mechanism. The sealing membrane further includes a substantially axially outboard extending second coaxial portion, substantially radially inward of the balance diameter of the seal. The horizontal portion is advantageously held fixed to a stub sleeve by an annular band. The angle between the vertical portion and the horizontal portion of sealing membrane enables directional control of the forces acting on stub sleeve and primary ring.

Dual barrier seal

An annular dual barrier seal includes a pair of axially extending inner seal lips and a pair of axially extending outer seal lips, the pair of inner seal lips are connected to the pair of outer seal lips by a radially outwardly extending web portion. The pair of inner seal lips extend axially by a first dimension and the pair of outer seal lips extend axially by a second dimension which is greater than the first dimension. The pair of inner seal lips have a sealing surface that is one of partially toroidal and partially elliptical and that engage the radially inwardly facing first sealing surface and the pair of outer seal lips have a sealing surface that is one of partially toroidal, partially elliptical and conical.

The gas turbine engine includes a turbine section comprising a stationary outer portion, a first rotating component, and a second rotating component, wherein the first rotating component includes an aft airfoil defining a hollow passageway and coupled to a radially extended first rotor portion, wherein the hollow passageway is in fluid communication with the stationary outer portion, wherein the second rotating component is coupled to a radially extended second rotor portion; and a seal assembly between a portion of the first rotating component and the second rotating component, the seal assembly defining a balance piston cavity therebetween, wherein the balance piston cavity is in fluid communication with the hollow passageway, wherein a flow of air is routed through the stationary outer portion and the hollow passageway to the balance piston cavity, and wherein a pressure of the flow of air within the balance piston cavity is controlled to provide an axial thrust that counteracts a thrust load on the second rotor portion.

A double sealing device for a rotating shaft comprising a first and a second seal of annular form mounted side by side in a peripheral groove formed in a wall of a circular cylindrical housing through which the shaft to be sealed passes. At least one of a discharge or vent channel opens into the peripheral groove between the two seals. The seals comprise a carrier ring with an outer axial flange and an inner radial flange, and a sealing washer applied to each carrier ring to cover a part of an outer face of the axial flange. A sealing lip bearing is formed slidably on the shaft, the first seal sealing a first fluid medium and the second seal sealing a second fluid medium. The axial flange has an extension forming a pierced structure, not covered by the sealing washer of the seal, and disposed facing the peripheral groove.
