Fluid transfer couplings and methods therefor

The present invention relates to couplers for transferring fluid between space assets, particularly in a vacuum microgravity environment with radiation exposure. In particular, the couplers provide for transfer of fluids, such as propellants, coolants, pressurant gases, or life-support fluids, preferably between assets in the space environment or in terrestrial environments such as Earth, the Moon, or Mars. The couplers provide self-alignment features which enable their use in blind-mate, telerobotic, fully autonomous robotic systems. The invention provides a common design architecture for different fluids accommodating a variety of flow rates and pressure drops depending upon the particular fluid. The basic wetted component design of the invention involves a rigid, centrally-disposed nozzle on the Passive Side which contacts and opens a poppet valve on the Active Side as the two sides are coupled; and a rigid annular nozzle on the Active Side, coaxially located with but occupying a different radius than the Passive Side nozzle, which contacts and opens a corresponding contamination cover on the Passive Side.

Metal pipes with anticorrosive polyolefin covering layer

The present invention provides a metal pipe coated on at least a section of the metal pipe with a polyolefin coating system, wherein the system consists of the following layers: (a) optionally, a corrosion protective layer of a chromate, phosphate or other salt; (b) a polyolefin based adhesive, preferably in a thickness of 0.3-5 mm; (c) a PE or PP coating layer, preferably in a thickness of 1-10 mm; (d) optionally, an adhesion promoting layer between the polyolefin based adhesive and a PE or PP layer; wherein the polyolefin based adhesive contains an organic phase consisting of substantially saturated hydrocarbons, and wherein the adhesive contains amorphous polypropylene, ethylene-propylene copolymers or poly(iso)butylene (co)polymers, said adhesive being flowable when a pressure of 10 kgf/cm.sup.2 is applied, wherein the PE or PP coating is a continuous layer over the coated section, and wherein said polyolefin based adhesive adheres to both the metal pipe and to said PE or PP coating.

An apparatus for shrouding the coated field joint area of connected line pipe segments, the shroud having first and second housing halves which have end walls which cooperate to form registering openings matching the diameter of the pipe to be shrouded, the housing halves forming a chamber. The housing can be of a clamshell design, being hinged on one side and having hasps, latches or the like on the other side to keep the shroud positioned once it is placed around the coated field joint area of a pipeline. An environment monitor is disposed in the chamber to measure conditions such as relative humidity and temperature.

No contact connectors

A coupling body having an opening and configured to receive a pipe in the opening. The coupling body is made of a metal material and the pipe is made of a different metal material to the metal material of the coupling body. An insulating sleeve lines at least a portion of an inner periphery of the coupling body adjacent the opening. The insulating sleeve is made of non-metallic material and is configured to serve as a physical non-metallic barrier between the metal material of the coupling and the different metal material of the pipe so the different metal material of the pipe does not contact the metallic material of the coupling body.
