A connector for use in an ultra-high vacuum system is disclosed herein. The connector has a metal conduit section with a first hardness, a metal fitting with a second hardness greater than the first hardness of the conduit section, and a metallic reaction-inhibiting barrier positioned between the conduit section and the fitting to sealingly attach the fitting to the conduit section. Oxide formation on the surface of the metal conduit section proximal to the reaction-inhibiting barrier is prevented either mechanically or via treatment with an oxide inhibitor. The reaction-inhibiting barrier is selected from a group of metals that will substantially inhibit metallic and chemical interaction between the conduit section and the fitting under ultra-high vacuum, temperature cycling, and reactive chemical conditions.

In one implementation, a method of making a lined pipe for reeled pipe operations includes determining a minimum weld overlay length for a first pipe joint, and providing the first pipe joint. The first pipe joint includes a first end opposite of a second end, a central opening, and an inner surface. The method includes mechanically lining the inner surface of the first pipe joint with a first section of alloy. The method also includes weld overlaying a second section of alloy and a third section of alloy in the central opening and on both sides of the first section of alloy over the minimum weld overlay length to prevent excessive deformation of the mechanically bonded section during reeling operations.

The applicator machine includes a frame configured to rotate about a section of pipeline to be heated and coated, rotating means operable to rotate the frame, and coating material applicators induction coils and radiant heaters mounted on the frame and rotatable therewith. The induction coil is configured to heat a section of pipeline adjacent to the induction coil to a coating material application temperature. The radiant heaters are configured to heat factory-applied coatings. Each coating material applicator sprays coating material through an aperture in a respective induction coil. The applicator includes an enclosure configured to surround a section of pipeline and provision for evacuating and collecting waste coating material. The coating material applicator may be configured to spray powder coating material, such as fusion bonded epoxy powder material and/or chemically modified polypropylene powder material.

The threaded connection for pipes or tubes includes, on at least one of the contact surfaces of the pin and the box, surface roughness, a Zn—Ni alloy plating layer, a Cu—Sn—Zn alloy plating layer and a solid lubricant coating layer. These are deposited from the contact surface side in the order of: surface roughness, the Zn—Ni alloy plating layer, the Cu—Sn—Zn alloy plating layer and the solid lubricant coating layer.
