An outdoor, free standing area heater comprises a vertically extending housing defining an interior and a heat producing source for producing a flame that heats air and at least one glass tube directing at least a portion of the heated air upwardly inside the housing. An upper hood is located above the housing at a position for the heated air conducted by the at least one glass tube to impinge on the upper hood, the upper hood being shaped to redirect the heated air in a direction away from the housing and in a general downward direction from the upper hood. The glass tube is substantially surrounded by side panels that are provided with a plurality of cutouts in a wall defining each of said side panels, wherein the cutouts leave a percentage closure of the wall in the range from 1 to 65 percent.

The back wall can be controllably switched between an opaque state and a transparent state. A combustion region between the front opening and the back wall is adapted to provide a flame. A controller coupled to the back wall enables a user to switch the back wall between the opaque and transparent states. In embodiments the back wall comprises a glass panel and switchable film on the glass panel. The controller is coupled to the switchable film.

Embodiments of the fireplace comprise a combustion chamber, a front opening allowing viewing within the combustion chamber, and a back wall opposite the front opening. The back wall can be controllably switched between an opaque state and a transparent state. A combustion region between the front opening and the back wall is adapted to provide a flame. A controller coupled to the back wall enables a user to switch the back wall between the opaque and transparent states. In embodiments the back wall comprises a glass panel and switchable film on the glass panel. The controller is coupled to the switchable film.

The touch sensor assembly according to an embodiment of the present invention includes an outer cover formed of a metallic material and configured to form a part of an exterior of the cooking apparatus; and a touch module installed to be in contact with a rear surface of the outer cover, and having a plurality of touch sensors, wherein a touching part which is formed by machining a rear surface of the outer cover which is in contact with the touch sensor, and easily elastically deformed when being touched by a user, and thus transfers a pressure to the touch sensor is formed.

A combined furniture and heating device having a concealable electric fireplace insert installed within a fireplace compartment of a furniture apparatus is provided. The electric fireplace insert has a front surface from which simulated flames are viewable when an opening of the fireplace compartment is uncovered so that the furniture apparatus is configured in its open configuration. The furniture apparatus includes a concealing panel removably installable over the opening configure the device in a concealed configuration so that the electric fireplace insert and its simulated flames viewable at its front surface are at least partially concealed. Power to a heating apparatus of the electric fireplace insert is turned on and off by a disabling device as the concealing panel is alternated between the open and concealed configurations. The disabling device can include a switch or a thermistor.
