The invention relates to an HVAC apparatus, method, and system. Aspects of the invention include a supplemental heat source with an air handler unit for a conventional forced air heating and cooling system. The supplemental heat source in one example is a hydronic subsystem. It can be used alone or to supplement the forced air subsystem. Another aspect of the invention includes an air handling subsystem that has a housing that can be highly flexible in configuration and installation. The housing can support internal components, including a hydronic or other supplemental heat source with the forced air components. At least two sides of the housing can be configured for access for maintenance and repair. A control system can be designed to eliminate need for defrost cycle for forced air refrigeration-type subsystem and/or for better maintenance for comfort in the air conditioned space.

A combined heat, cooling and power system is configured to generate energy as well capture a large percentage of energy that would otherwise be lost using components, including heat transfer components, embedded within a vessel to transfer energy in the form of heat to liquid within the vessel.

Device and Method for Converting Solar PV Energy into Thermal Energy Storage Using Combined Heat-Pump and Resistive Heating Elements in Water Heater

Photovoltaics and an MPPT DC/DC converter powers a DC bus of a controller. It uses an electric heat pump to heat a mass like water, and also has a resistive heating element to heat the mass. A microcontroller controls a variable frequency (VFD) motor drive to power the electric heat pump when sufficient solar power is available to run the heat pump and uses the resistive element to heat the thermal mass when insufficient solar power exists for the heat pump or when excess solar power is available. A controller has an MPPT input for solar power and a VFD to provide power through an output to a heat pump-based water heater and an output to power a resistive water heating element. A microcontroller determines solar power available and runs the heat pump when possible and the resistive element when insufficient power is available or when excess power is available.

Heat pump and method of operating heat pump to control power to boiler based on expected efficiency of heat pump

A heat pump may include a compressor configured to compress a refrigerant, a first temperature sensor configured to detect an outdoor temperature, a second temperature sensor provided in heating pipes connected to a heating device, and a controller. Based on a first sensing value of the first temperature sensor, the controller may be configured to control a compressor, control power to a boiler, and/or calculate an expected efficiency of the heat pump. Based on the expected efficiency and/or a second sensing value of a second temperature sensor, the controller may be configured to control power to the boiler.

AIR HEATING AND POTABLE WATER SYSTEM HAVING A WATER HEATER AND A HYDRONIC AIR HANDLER

Air heating and potable water systems have a thermostat with a computer processing unit (CPU), a hot water heater, a hydronic air handler, and a primary pump controlling flow of hot water from the water heater into the hydronic air handler, which has a hydronic coil, a blower, and a first control panel having a CPU in operative communicates with the thermostat. The hydronic coil receives hot water from the water heater to warm air passing over the hydronic coil. The primary pump is in operative communication with the first control panel and an indicator of hot water flow. The indicator of hot water flow is in operative communication with either the thermostat or the first control panel, and any CPU in the system stores a priority instruction, which upon an indication of hot water flow deactivates or delays activation of the primary pump for a predetermined period of time.
