AMMONIA AND HYDROGEN ELECTROCHEMICAL CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEMS
An electrochemical climate control system circulates a working fluid comprising ammonia (NH.sub.3) and hydrogen (H.sub.2). An evaporator volatilizes liquid ammonia for a refrigeration effect. An electrochemical device can increase a total pressure of the working fluid and/or a first partial pressure of ammonia and decrease a second partial pressure of hydrogen when an f is applied. A condenser cools the working fluid/transforms ammonia to a liquid. A separator separates liquid ammonia from gas phase hydrogen. A heat exchanger may be provided downstream of the evaporator. The system may include an ejector combining vapor phase ammonia and gas phase hydrogen in a pressurized stream. A second electrochemical device is optionally included that decreases a pressure of gas phase hydrogen exiting the separator and which generates electrical potential that is transferred to the first electrochemical device. Such high efficiency systems may be free of any mechanical pumps or moving parts.
Electrochemical compressor refrigeration appartus with integral leak detection system
An electrochemical compressor system, such as an electrochemical refrigeration system includes a sealed vessel that reduces leak issues related to the electrochemical cell. The sealed vessel may be molded or formed from a polymer or a composite polymer having reinforcing materials, such as fibers therein. The sealed vessel may be plated with metal to reduce gas permeation through the wall of the vessel and to accommodate and improve the attachment of conduits, including metal conduits thereto. A metal conduit may be brazed onto a vessel and the brazing material may be selected for polymer to metal joining and for reduced contamination potential of the system. The electrochemical compressor system incorporates a leak sensor configured at least partially within the sealed rigid vessel that measures the pressure within the vessel.
THERMO-ELECTROCHEMICAL CONVERTER WITH INTEGRATED ENERGY STORAGE
An electrochemical direct heat to electricity converter includes a primary thermal energy source; a working fluid; an electrochemical cell comprising at least one membrane electrode assembly including a first porous electrode, a second porous electrode and at least one membrane, wherein the at least one membrane is sandwiched between the first and second porous electrodes and is a conductor of ions of the working fluid; an energy storage reservoir; and an external load. The electrochemical cell operates on heat to produce electricity. When thermal energy available from the primary thermal energy source is greater than necessary to meet demands of the external load, excess energy is stored in the energy storage reservoir, and when the thermal energy available from the primary thermal energy source is insufficient to meet the demands of the external load, at least a portion of the excess energy stored in the energy storage reservoir is used to supply power to the external load.

Electrochemical compressor based heating element and hybrid hot water heater employing same
An electrochemical compressor type heat pump system is described. An electrochemical compressor compresses a mixed gas refrigerant whereby heat from the compression can be used to heat an object. The electrochemical compressor is capable of producing high pressure gas from a mixed fluid system including an electrochemically-active component, such as hydrogen, and at least one refrigerant fluid, for example water. Any suitable proton associable compound, such as any suitable ionic or polar solvent compound, may be used in the mixed gas refrigerant. The electrochemical compressor may be configured in a hot water heater along with a secondary type heating source to produce a hybrid hot water heater.
