Rifles and muzzle loading rifles receiving propellant charges in break open and bolt action configurations, and barrel extensions therefor

A break open rifle and bolt action rifle having a barrel extension with a breech end for receiving a propellant charge, a muzzle end with an extended attachment structure for receiving a complementary attachment structure of a barrel, and a chamber disposed within and through the barrel extension having a first diameter at a first end and a narrowing portion adjacent a second end opposite the first end, the narrowing portion having a second diameter smaller than the first diameter, wherein the first diameter of the chamber is sized to receive the propellant charge therein, and the second diameter of the narrowing portion is sized to prevent the propellant charge from being further inserted past the narrowing portion, and to prevent a projectile from being inserted through the chamber from the barrel muzzle end. A bolt action configuration having dual diameter non-rotating bolt with an extractor and ejector mechanism for removing a propellant charge.

Bullet and casing projectile for rifled barrel

A projectile for loading into a rifled barrel includes a casing having a cylindrical body, a forward aerodynamic end, and a free end opposite the aerodynamic end, the cylindrical body of the casing defining an interior cavity extending to and in open communication with the free end. The projectile also has a bullet sized to initially slidably engage the casing along a partial length of the interior cavity through the free end. Upon discharge of propellant, the bullet is forced to slidably engage the casing farther within the cavity, preferably such that an entire length of the bullet is housed within the casing cavity, whereby a circumference of the casing is increased such that the increased circumference of the casing catches barrel rifling of the muzzleloader rifle. This allows a smaller caliber bullet to be used in a fouled barrel, while increasing accuracy of the muzzleloader rifle.

Pressure discriminating cartridge chamber

Provided is a firearm cartridge chamber with a relief feature that traps a portion of a cartridge case within the cartridge chamber when fired. The relief feature causes the cartridge case to deform within the chamber, wherein it optionally separates into a forward section and a rearward section. The deformed case remains trapped after firing, preventing extraction of the fired case and the chambering or firing of any subsequent cartridges, thereby causing a firearm malfunction. The cartridge chamber can distinguish between higher and lower pressure cartridges by allowing for normal firing and function with blank training ammunition while also facilitating localized deformation of the cartridge case when firing standard ammunition that includes one or more projectiles. The inventive chamber prevents more than one higher pressure round from firing while allowing lower pressure or training rounds to fire without limitation, which aids in enhanced safety during training exercises.

Firearm barrel feeding geometry

Provided are barrels, barrel assemblies, firearms, and associated components, assemblies, and methods. A barrel of a firearm may include an inner surface defining a bore configured to guide a projectile as the projectile is propelled through the bore by pressurized gas. The barrel may define a muzzle end, a chamber end opposite the muzzle end, and a longitudinal axis extending between the muzzle end and the chamber end. The inner surface may define a chamber at the chamber end of the barrel. The chamber may receive a cartridge and to support at least a portion of a casing of the cartridge during firing. The barrel may further define one or more barrel feed ramps at the chamber end configured to guide at least a portion of the cartridge into the chamber during an operational cycle of the firearm. The barrel may engage with a barrel extension as a barrel assembly.
