A device for carrying cordage includes a flexible, elongate and planar inner core having two opposite longitudinal sides and two opposite ends; and a cord wound around the two opposite longitudinal sides of the inner core along a longitudinal direction between the two opposite ends. The inner core and the wound cord together form an insert which has sufficient rigidity that facilitates full insertion of the insert into the sheath, strap, belt, or enclosure without bunching or kinking of the cord in a way that blocks a trailing portion of the cord from inserting into the sheath, strap, belt, or enclosure.
