Intershaft seal assembly with multi-axis stepped grooves
10948014 · 2021-03-16 · ·

An intershaft seal assembly for maintaining separation between a piston ring and a pair of mating rings is presented. The assembly includes a piston ring interposed between forward and aft mating rings and a plurality of hydrodynamic grooves disposed along a sealing face of each mating ring. Each hydrodynamic groove further includes at least two adjoining steps wherein each step is defined by a base wall arranged to decrease depthwise in the direction opposite to rotation of an inner shaft. Two adjoining base walls define a base shoulder which locally redirects potion of a longitudinal flow within the groove to form an outward flow in the direction of the piston ring. Base walls are bounded by and intersect a pair of side walls with at least one side shoulder thereon which narrows the groove widthwise and locally redirects portion of the longitudinal flow to form a lateral flow from one side wall toward another side wall. Outward and lateral flows cooperate, with or without the longitudinal flow, to increase fluid pressure and maintain separation between the piston ring and the mating rings.

A gas turbine engine according to an exemplary aspect of the present disclosure includes, among other things, a shaft configured to rotate during operation of the gas turbine engine, and a squeeze film damper radially outside the shaft. The squeeze film damper includes a cavity including a film of lubricant axially between first and second cavity seals, and further includes a reservoir fluidly coupled to the cavity. A method is also disclosed.

Aspirating face seal assembly for a rotary machine

A seal assembly for a rotary machine includes a seal bearing face that opposes a rotating component of the machine and a slide device coupled with the seal bearing face. The slide device axially moves toward the rotating component responsive to pressurization of the rotary machine. The slide device includes cross-over ports and the seal bearing includes feed ports. The feed ports extend through the seal bearing face to form aerostatic portions of a film bearing between the seal bearing face and the rotating component. The seal bearing face and/or the rotating component has a non-planar surface that, during rotating motion of the rotating component relative to the face of the seal bearing face, forms aerodynamic portions of the film bearing.
