The invention relates to a variable valve train for switching an outlet valve of an internal combustion engine to an engine braking mode. The variable valve train has a camshaft with a first cam, which is designed as a normal operation cam, and a second cam, which is designed as an engine braking cam. A first rocking lever has a first stroke device which is designed for selectively making or breaking a first operative connection between the first cam and the outlet valve by means of the first rocking lever. A second rocking lever has a second stroke device which is designed for selectively making or breaking a second operative connection between the second cam and the outlet valve by means of the second rocking lever. A valve device selectively connects the first stroke device or the second stroke device to a fluid feed line.

The compression-release brake system comprises a self-contained compression brake control module (CBCM) operatively coupled to the exhaust valve for controlling a lift and a phase angle thereof. The CBCM includes a casing defining an actuator cavity, a actuation piston disposed outside the casing so as to define an actuation piston cavity between the casing and the actuation piston, and a check valve provided between the actuation piston cavity and a compression brake actuator disposed in the actuator cavity. The actuation piston reciprocates relative to the casing. The compression brake actuator includes an actuator element and a biasing spring. The actuator element selectively engages the check valve when deactivated so as to unlock the actuation piston cavity and disengages from the check valve when activated so as to lock the actuation piston cavity.

Additionally, a lost motion adding mechanism configured, in a second default operating state, to lose the auxiliary valve actuation motion and configured, in a second activated state, to convey the auxiliary valve actuation motion, wherein the lost motion adding mechanism is in series with the lost motion subtracting mechanism in the valve actuation load path at least during the second activated state.
