The system provides a tunable exhaust system including a tunable resonator and a pair of tunable mufflers. The tunable resonator includes a housing including first, second and third expansion chambers. A pair of bank-by-bank exhaust conduits extends through the housing. At least one of the conduits includes a band of peripheral perforations within the first expansion chamber. The band is formed at an angle relative to the long axis of the conduit on which it is formed. The mufflers include inlet and outlet pipes. At least one of the outlet pipes includes a variable exhaust gas flow assembly. The variable exhaust gas flow assembly includes a vane shaft, an exhaust gas regulating vane attached to the vane shaft, and a vane actuator for regulating the position of the vane shaft.

Exhaust device for internal combustion engine

An exhaust muffler includes a first muffler section connected to an exhaust pipe and a second muffler section connected to the first muffler section. Exhaust gases delivered from the exhaust pipe are discharged from the first muffler section and the second muffler section out of the exhaust muffler. The first muffler section includes a tubular member made up of an inner pipe to which the exhaust pipe is connected and an outer pipe covering the inner pipe, and a connector connecting the tubular member and the second muffler section to each other. The first muffler section has a first expansion chamber defined therein between the inner pipe and the outer pipe. The inner pipe houses therein a valve for changing an amount of exhaust gases passing through the inner pipe. The first muffler section includes a curved portion that is curved vertically as viewed in side elevation of the vehicle. The exhaust muffler has a second expansion chamber defined in the second muffler section rearward and upward of the first muffler section, the second expansion chamber having a cross-sectional area larger than a cross-sectional area of the first expansion chamber. There is thus provided an exhaust device for an internal combustion engine, which includes a muffler compact in a longitudinal direction thereof.

A muffler, for an internal combustion engine exhaust system, includes a muffler housing (12) with a housing jacket (14) elongated in a housing longitudinal axis (A) direction and with an outer panel (16) connected to the housing jacket at both axial end areas thereof to define a muffler interior (18). An inner panel (20) is arranged in and divides the muffler interior. A muffling unit (24) includes an exhaust-gas-carrying inner pipe (26), an outer pipe (28) enclosing the inner pipe and muffling material (32) arranged between the inner pipe and the outer pipe. The inner pipe is accommodated in an opening (48) of an inner panel and in an opening (40) of one of the outer panels or of an additional inner panel. The outer pipe is permanently connected to the inner panel or/and to one of the outer panels or to the additional inner panel.

Valve assembly

A valve assembly for an exhaust system includes a conduit, a valve flap disposed within an exhaust passageway for controlling exhaust flow through the exhaust passageway, a shaft supporting the valve flap in the exhaust passageway for rotation about a pivot axis, and a mass damper disposed external to the conduit and coupled to the shaft. The mass damper includes a longitudinal segment coupled to the shaft. The mass damper also includes a first damping mass that is disposed proximal to a first end of the longitudinal segment and is linearly movable along a centerline axis to a first distance with respect to the pivot axis. The mass damper further includes a second damping mass that is disposed proximal to a second end of the longitudinal segment and is linearly movable along the centerline axis to a second distance with respect to the pivot axis.
