20190195100 · 2019-06-27 ·

A selective acoustic soundproofing device for a vehicle includes a housing that is configured to couple to an exhaust system of the vehicle so that an internal space defined by the housing is in fluidic communication with the exhaust system. A wall that is coupled to the housing extends from proximate to the first end to proximate to the second end of the housing to define a first passage and a second passage through the housing. A selector that is coupled to the housing is configured to selectively direct sound pressure from the engine through the first and second passages. A baffle positioned in the first passage is configured for acoustic quieting of loudness of the sound pressure when the selector is positioned to direct the sound pressure from the engine through the first passage relative to when the selector is positioned to direct the sound pressure through the second passage.

Variable Exhaust Control System

An apparatus for adjusting power and noise characteristics of an internal combustion engine comprises a wall configured to define an engine cylinder that includes a bore and a compression relief passage. A compression relief valve is configured to selectively adjust fluid flow capacity of the compression relief passage. A manifold is configured to be in fluid communication with the exhaust passage and includes an exhaust bypass valve to permit exhaust to at least partially bypass a noise suppressor. Operational characteristics of the engine can be adjusted along a range that extends from a first set of operational characteristics present when both the compression relief valve and the exhaust bypass valve are in a fully open position to a second set of operational characteristics present when both the compression relief valve and the exhaust bypass valve are in a fully closed position.

Gasoline particulate filter diagnostics

Methods and systems are provided for diagnostics of a gasoline particulate filter in an exhaust system. In one example, a method may include indicating degradation of a hose coupled across a particulate filter responsive to a difference between a first differential pressure and a second differential pressure being greater than a threshold, the first differential pressure measured by a differential pressure sensor positioned in the hose responsive to a downstream exhaust tuning valve being fully open, the second differential pressure measured by the differential pressure sensor responsive to the exhaust tuning valve being fully closed.

Methods and systems are provided for diagnostics of an exhaust tuning valve during vehicle-off conditions. In one example, the engine may be reverse rotated, unfueled while the position of the exhaust is varied and an intake air flow is estimated at each position of the exhaust tuning valve. The exhaust tuning valve may be diagnosed based on a change in air flow with the variation in the position of the exhaust tuning valve.

System and a method for attenuating sound produced by a vehicle

The present disclosure discloses a system for attenuating sound produced by a vehicle. The system comprises a navigation device associated with the vehicle for determining location details of the vehicle, a sound reduction unit provisioned in an exhaust assembly of the vehicle. The system further includes an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) of the vehicle communicatively coupled to the navigation device and the sound reduction unit. The ECU is configured to detect sound reduction location, by comparing the location details with a pre-defined location data and operate the sound reduction unit to attenuate sound produced by the vehicle when the sound reduction location is detected. The system of the present disclosure, attenuates sound intensity of the vehicle to a desired level by considering surrounding conditions of the vehicle, thus the vehicle noise may be automatically attenuated in the sound sensitive areas or locations.

Wastegate control systems and methods for engine sound emission

A turbocharger control system of a vehicle includes a trigger module that generates a trigger signal when a transmission of the vehicle is in one of (i) park and (ii) neutral. A wastegate target module, in response to the generation of the trigger signal, sets a target opening of a turbocharger wastegate to a predetermined opening and independently of a position of an accelerator pedal. The predetermined opening is greater than zero percent opening of the turbocharger wastegate. A wastegate actuator module actuates the turbocharger wastegate based on the target opening of the turbocharger wastegate.

Exhaust system for an engine

An exhaust system for an engine has a volume element such as a muffler or a silencer. First and second exhaust pipes are connected as dual exhaust pipes upstream of or downstream of the volume element. The first exhaust pipe has a first length (L1). A valve is positioned in the second exhaust pipe at a distance (D) from the volume element. The distance D is a fraction of L1 such that the second pipe is a resonator for the first pipe with the valve in a closed position. A method of controlling exhaust noise includes positioning a valve in the first exhaust pipe at a distance (D) from a volume element with D being a specified fraction of a length of the second exhaust pipe, and closing the valve such that the first pipe provides a resonator for the second pipe to counteract standing wave in the second pipe.

VEHICLE EXHAUST DEVICE

A vehicle exhaust device includes a muffler body that has an interior space divided into a plurality of expansion chambers by a partition wall, and an exhaust control valve that switches an exhaust passage in the muffler body. The exhaust passage includes a first exhaust passage and a second exhaust passage. The first exhaust passage connects an upstream end and a downstream end of the muffler body straight. The second exhaust passage passes through the plurality of expansion chambers via a connecting pipe that connects the plurality of expansion chambers. A center of the first exhaust passage is located above a center of the muffler body in a vehicle upper-lower direction, and the second exhaust passage is located below the first exhaust passage.

Vehicle including cabin disturbance mitigation system

An automotive vehicle includes an internal combustion engine that generates exhaust gas and an exhaust system that expels the exhaust gas from the vehicle via at least one of a first exhaust conduit and a second exhaust conduit. A disturbance sensor is installed within a cabin of the vehicle, and is configured to detect a disturbance within the cabin and to output a disturbance signal indicative of the disturbance. An exhaust valve has a plurality of positions and adjusts an amount of the exhaust gas delivered to the first and second exhaust conduits. The automotive vehicle further includes an electronic hardware controller in signal communication with the at least one disturbance sensor and the exhaust valve. The controller adjusts the position of the exhaust valve based on the disturbance signal to reduce the disturbance within the cabin.
