A reductant delivery system is arranged to inject a reductant upstream of the SCR catalyst. The controller controls the reductant delivery system to inject the reductant into the exhaust gas feedstream upstream of the SCR catalyst based upon inputs from the first and second exhaust gas sensors, the engine-out exhaust gas sensor, and the first and second temperature sensors.

Method of detecting a need for regeneration of an exhaust particulate filter, and exhaust system

A method of detecting a need for regeneration of an exhaust particulate filter is described. A first pressure drop is detected in a flow section of an exhaust system which includes the exhaust particulate filter. In addition, an exhaust gas temperature is determined. An exhaust gas mass flow flowing through the exhaust particulate filter is then calculated on the basis of the exhaust gas temperature and the pressure drop. Furthermore, a second pressure drop at the exhaust particulate filter is determined. A need for regeneration is detected when the second pressure drop exceeds a predefined pressure limit value that is dependent on the exhaust gas mass flow. Moreover, an exhaust system for an internal combustion engine is presented which includes an exhaust particulate filter.

The invention relates to a method for regenerating a particulate filter in the exhaust gas channel of an internal combustion engine. Here, the particulate filter is divided into several zones for determining the loading state, and, at the same time, a temperature distribution over the cross section of the particulate filter is determined. In order to prevent the soot retained in the edge zones of in the particulate filter from being insufficiently oxidized, when it is ascertained that the edge zones have been sufficiently loaded, the exhaust gas temperature is raised to a temperature which, in spite of the heat losses in the edge areas, lies above the temperature at which oxidation of the soot particles can take place. The invention further relates to an internal combustion engine having an exhaust gas channel and a particulate filter arranged in the exhaust gas channel, said internal combustion engine being configured to carry out such a method.
