System and method using fan control to assist vehicle braking
A system for controlling a fan of a vehicle engine. The system comprises: i) a fan configured to selectively cool the vehicle engine; and ii) an engine control module configured to: a) turn on the fan when the engine temperature exceeds a selected temperature threshold; b) determine when the vehicle engine is operating in an engine braking mode; and c) in response to the engine operating in the engine braking mode, turn on the fan when the engine temperature is below the selected temperature threshold. The engine control module turns the fan off as a means of hardware protection of the fan clutch even during engine braking modes.
Systems and methods of adjusting operating parameters of a vehicle based on vehicle duty cycles
A method includes: receiving, by a controller of a vehicle, operation data indicative of a duty cycle for the vehicle, wherein the duty cycle is a substantially repeatable set of vehicle or vehicle component operations for a particular event or for a predefined time period; identifying, by the controller, a desired vehicle duty cycle from a population of vehicle duty cycles based on the operation data indicative of the duty cycle for the vehicle and on a desired operating parameter of the vehicle; receiving, by the controller, a set of trim parameters that are electronic operational parameters associated with the desired vehicle duty cycle; and controlling, by the controller, one or more operating points of the vehicle based on the set of trim parameters.

DYNAMIC CONTROL FOR VEHICLE COOLANT
A system comprising a computer including a processor and a memory, the memory including instructions such that the processor is programmed to: receive at least one of expected upcoming traffic behavior or actual upcoming traffic behavior corresponding to an upcoming segment of a roadway being traversed by a vehicle; adjust a radiator hysteresis timer based on the expected upcoming traffic behavior or the actual upcoming traffic behavior; and transmit a control signal to an actuator to actuate a radiator fan based on the adjusted radiator hysteresis timer.
Low solidity vehicle cooling fan
An axial flow fan for use with a vehicle cooling system includes a hub defining an axis of rotation, and at least five blades supported on the hub. Each blade includes a leading edge, a trailing edge opposite the leading edge, a pressure side extending between the leading edge and the trailing edge, a suction side opposite the pressure side, a tip, and a root opposite the tip along a blade length. A solidity of the axial flow fan, measured as a percentage of an annular flow area between an outer diameter of the hub and an outer diameter of the tips of the blades projected onto a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation that is occupied by the blades, is less than 40%.
Supplemental engine braking system
Systems and apparatuses include method of controlling a fan to supplement engine braking, including determining that an engagement condition for the fan exists, interpreting an operating parameter of the fan, determining a modified operating parameter for the fan based on a predefined limit, operating the fan according to the modified operating parameter, and ceasing operation of the fan according to the modified operating parameter when a disengagement condition for the fan exists.

FAN ASSEMBLY FOR A MOTOR VEHICLE
A fan assembly including a first cooling fan arranged with respect to an air flow direction downstream of a heat exchanger and a second cooling fan. The first cooling fan is a radial fan that draws cooling air axially and expels the cooling air radially and the second cooling fan is an axial fan that draws cooling air axially and expels the cooling air axially. The axial fan is arranged downstream of the heat exchanger and laterally adjacent to the radial fan in a plane parallel to the rear side of the heat exchanger in a plane parallel to the front side of the heat exchanger.
