The invention relates to a method for controlling a turbocharger system (10) fluidly connected to an exhaust manifold (102) of a combustion engine (100). The turbocharger system (10) comprises a turbocharger turbine (22) operable by exhaust gases from said exhaust manifold, and a tank (40) with pressurized gas, said tank being fluidly connectable to said turbocharger turbine. The method comprises the steps of: determining an engine operational mode in which the combustion engine runs below a predetermined speed, determining an external load requiring engine torque which at said engine operational mode would cause the combustion engine to stall, and subsequently injecting pressurized gas from said tank to drive said turbocharger turbine such that the turbocharger turbine is at least partly driven by said pressurized gas, thereby preventing stalling of the combustion engine.

An engine assembly having a secondary injector for injecting fuel upstream of the turbine section and downstream of the combustion engine is also disclosed.

Twin Scroll Turbocharger with Waste Heat Recovery

Bypass air from downstream of the compressor is directed into a heat exchanger that draws heat from the exhaust gas of the engine. The bypass air does not include fuel, and instead is heated by the exhaust gas in the heat exchanger. The bypass duct enables air mass flow through the compressor to be increased, thereby preventing compressor surge at low engine speeds. The turbocharger turbine includes a dual entry scroll. The bypass air is fed into the first scroll after being heated in the heat exchanger, and the engine' exhaust gas is fed into the second scroll. Use of two scrolls enables the blowdown impulse energy of the exhaust gas to be retained within the exhaust manifold prior to entry into the turbine, thereby providing improved turbocharger response and preventing backflow of exhaust gas into the bypass duct. Using the exhaust energy to heat the bypass air instead of combusting additional fuel leads to increased engine efficiency.

POWERPLANT AND RELATED CONTROL SYSTEM AND METHOD

A hydrogen fueled powerplant including an internal combustion engine that drives a motor-generator, and has a two-stage turbocharger, for an aircraft. A control system controls the operation of the motor-generator to maintain the engine at a speed selected based on controlling the engine equivalence ratio. The control system controls an afterburner, an intercooler and an aftercooler to maximize powerplant efficiency. The afterburner also adds power to the turbochargers during high-altitude restarts. The turbochargers also include motor-generators that extract excess power from the exhaust.
