An engine including having a frame structure with a central longitudinal space containing a gear train in which end gears drive end crankshafts and a central gear drives a central crankshaft, a pair of dual piston and cylinder assembly are connected between each end crankshaft and central crankshaft on opposite side of the central space. The combustion chambers of cylinders on each side of the central are intercommunicated by passages extending through the hubs of gears in the gear train, a controller for the fuel injectors of the cylinders selectively causes the double pistons of each pair of passage connected to have either simultaneous internally fired power drive strokes in one mode or simultaneous internally fired and shared power drive strokes in another mode.

OPEN EXHAUST CHAMBER CONSTRUCTIONS FOR OPPOSED-PISTON ENGINES

A configuration for a uniflow-scavenged, opposed-piston engine reduces exhaust cross-talk caused by mass flow between cylinders resulting from one cylinder having an open exhaust port during scavenging and/or charging while an adjacent cylinder is undergoing blowdown. Some configurations include a wall or other barrier feature between cylinders that are adjacent to each other and fire one after the other. Additionally, or alternatively, some engine configurations include cylinders with intake and exhaust ports sized so that there is an overlap in crank angle of two or more cylinders having open exhaust ports of about 65 crank angle degrees or less.

BARRIER RING AND ASSEMBLY FOR A CYLINDER OF AN OPPOSED-PISTON ENGINE

A barrier ring for a cylinder assembly for an opposed-piston engine fits into a groove fashioned into a portion of the cylinder liner that is adjacent to the top dead center location of the end surfaces of the pistons, in a volume of the cylinder liner that defines the combustion chamber. The barrier ring and groove are part of a barrier assembly that prevents heat generated during combustion from reaching the outer wall of the cylinder assembly, reducing the need for conventional cooling systems and increasing the amount of heat retained in the combustion chamber. The barrier assembly allows for increased engine efficiency because of the combustion heat retained in the combustion chamber, as well as a reduction in the overall size of the engine because of the reduction in engine cooling needed.

A piston with external pins boss connected with at least two coupled crankshafts, transforming reciprocating linear movement of the piston into rotary motion of the crankshafts. A cylinder jacket with the piston head forms the combustion chamber. Piston inner space with static counterpart forms an additional intake-breathing chamber. On static counterpart, an income and outgo valves can be located. From reciprocating movement of the piston, the intake-breathing chamber will provide intake gases to the combustion chamber employing a transfer port. Previous to the transfer port, a control valve may be disposed to regulate the volume of intake gases entering the combustion chamber. The intake-breathing gases not used for combustion may be mixed with combustion exhaust gases. Length of connecting links, on inverse configuration, provides extra time at maximum compression rate; improving evaporation and combustion stage timing.
