Additionally, tracking wet stack residue buildup may allow an IED to attempt to prevent or reduce accumulation of the wet stack residue. The IED may track an operating power level of the diesel engine to estimate the rate of residue buildup.

The method including: detecting an anomaly; measuring the duration of the detected anomaly; if the measured duration is less than a predetermined duration threshold, and if the detected anomaly is present in the predetermined list of sporadic anomalies at the current instant, incrementing an occurrence counter; and if the value of the occurrence counter is greater than a predetermined occurrence threshold, confirming the detected anomaly as a sporadic anomaly.

The method includes inputting multiple training data to a training computer. The training data include the internal combustion engine state variable and the categorization result that is correct and associated with the internal combustion engine state variable. The method further includes updating the mapping based on the training data with the training computer. The training data are distributed to the regions and have a distribution density that is increased at locations closer to a border between the regions.
