Gas Turbine Power Generation Systems Using Hydrogen-Containing Fuel Produced By A Wave Reformer And Methods Of Operating Such Systems
An improved power generation system and methods of its operation are provided, wherein the system combines: (i) a wave reformer, (ii) an optional second wave rotor, and (iii) a gas turbine in a flexible range of novel designs. Such a hybrid power generation system can thermally crack or decompose hydrocarbon fuel to produce a high-pressure fuel product, including mainly hydrogen and lead to a higher thermal efficiency than existing engines with low to no direct emission footprint.
Rotary Detonation Rocket Engine Generator
A rotary detonation rocket engine generator system can include an axial drive shaft operably coupleable to an electrical generator. At least one support arm is radially coupled to the axial drive shaft and has corresponding rotary detonation rocket engines. An air-fuel mixing chamber receives ambient air and fuel to form an air-fuel mixture and deliver the air-fuel mixture to an annular combustion chamber. At least one pulse detonation combustion chamber is in fluid communication with the annular combustion chamber to receive an oxidizer and fuel to form an oxidizer-fuel mixture. The at least one pulse detonation combustion chamber creates a detonation wave that travels along the at least one pulse detonation chamber to the annular combustion chamber and ignites the air-fuel mixture as the detonation wave travels around the annular combustion chamber to generate thrust force that causes rotation of the axial drive shaft to drive the electrical generator.

A method of controlling a rotary engine is disclosed. The rotary engine includes a shroud surrounding a rotor. The rotor carries a combustion chamber spaced from an axis of rotation of the rotor. A pressure activated valve is located between the combustion chamber and obliquely arranged exhaust nozzles. An ECU controls the combustion cycle of the engine based on a signal from a pressure sensor in the combustion chamber. The electronic control responds to the pressure signal from the pressure sensor to open a fuel control valve, to fire a spark plug and cause combustion of the fuel within the combustion chamber, and to thereafter open an air control valve to purge the combustion chamber of exhaust gasses.

Multi-can annular rotating detonation combustor
A rotating detonation combustion system is generally provided. The rotating detonation combustion system includes an outer wall, an upstream wall, and a radial wall. The outer wall is defined circumferentially around a combustor centerline extended along a lengthwise direction. The outer wall defines a first radius portion generally upstream along the outer wall. A second radius portion is defined generally downstream along the outer wall and a transition portion is defined between the first and second radius portions. The first radius portion defines a first radius greater than a second radius at the second radius portion. The transition portion defines a generally decreasing radius from the first radius portion to the second radius portion. The upstream wall is defined circumferentially around the combustor centerline and is extended along the lengthwise direction and inward radially of the first radius portion of the outer wall. An oxidizer passage is defined within the upstream wall. A combustion chamber is defined downstream of the upstream wall and radially inward of the outer wall. The radial wall is coupled to the outer wall and the upstream wall. A fluid injection opening is defined through at least one of the radial wall or the outer wall adjacent to the combustion chamber.
TURBINE ENGINE ASSEMBLY INCLUDING A ROTATING DETONATION COMBUSTOR
A rotating detonation combustor includes a combustion chamber configured for a rotating detonation process to produce a flow of combustion gas and an air plenum configured to contain a volume of air. The rotating detonation combustor also includes a flow passage coupled in flow communication between the combustion chamber and the air plenum and configured to channel an airflow from the air plenum. The rotating detonation combustor also includes a fuel inlet coupled in flow communication with the flow passage and configured to channel a fuel flow into the flow passage. The flow passage includes a plurality of fuel mixing mechanisms configured to mix the airflow and the fuel flow within the combustion chamber.
Turbine engine assembly including a rotating detonation combustor
A rotating detonation combustor includes a combustion chamber configured for a rotating detonation process to produce a flow of combustion gas and an air plenum configured to contain a volume of air. The rotating detonation combustor also includes a flow passage coupled in flow communication between the combustion chamber and the air plenum and configured to channel an airflow from the air plenum. The rotating detonation combustor also includes a fuel inlet coupled in flow communication with the flow passage and configured to channel a fuel flow into the flow passage. The flow passage includes a plurality of fuel mixing mechanisms configured to mix the airflow and the fuel flow within the combustion chamber.
ROTATING INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE
A rotating internal combustion engine is provided. The engine includes a drive shaft and a rotatable cylinder coupled with the drive shaft. Combustion chambers are formed through the rotatable cylinder. The combustion chambers are defined by combustion blades of the rotatable cylinder. The engine is configured to generate power from combustion of the gases and from turbine movement caused from the combustion gases. Also disclosed is a fixed cylinder combustion engine.
