PASSIVE SECONDARY AIR ASSIST NOZZLES

An injection system includes an inner nozzle body defining a first air path along a longitudinal axis. The first air path defines a converging-diverging section between an upstream portion of the first air path and an outlet orifice of the first air path. A main orifice is defined at a narrowest portion of the converging-diverging section. A fuel circuit wall is outboard of the inner nozzle body. A fuel path is defined between the fuel circuit wall and the inner nozzle body. An outer nozzle body outboard of the fuel circuit wall has a second air path defined through the inner nozzle body for communication of air from the outer nozzle body into the first air path, wherein the second air path meets the first air path at a second orifice in the first air path downstream of the main orifice of the inner nozzle body.

Self-ignited burns can be increased by stimulation. External ignition must often be carried out in the combustion chamber. Often an ignition nucleus is formed electrically. This has energetic disadvantages. Required internals can be disadvantageous. Ignitions with plasma torches also need fixed internals. Electromagnetically, however, the ignition field can be widened, the combustion rate increased and the temperature changed. Due to high electrical consumption, this effective ignition has not yet been advantageous for aerospace applications. This concept should be feasible with low electrical energy requirements.

Sufficient electrical energy can be provided by turbopump, generator or thermocouple. For better coupling of electromagnetism, catalytic absorbers and possibly other particles are used. These lower the activation energy. Contactless ignition can be achieved using ceramics or metallic antennas. Ignition in the center of the combustion chamber at the highest pressures is particularly promising. The aim is to achieve combustion that is as directional as possible.

The cooling system includes an air inlet formed within an exterior of the structural wall, a cooling channel forming a flow path through the structural wall at the glow plug housing, and an air passage.

REGENERATIVE COOLING AND ADJUSTABLE THROAT FOR ROTATING DETONATION ENGINE

A method for operating a rotating detonation engine, having a radially outer wall extending along an axis; a radially inner wall extending along the axis, wherein the radially inner wall is positioned within the radially outer wall to define an annular detonation chamber having an inlet and an outlet, wherein the method includes flowing liquid phase fuel along at least one wall of the radially inner wall and the radially outer wall in a direction from the outlet toward the inlet to cool the at least one wall and heat the liquid fuel to provide a heated liquid fuel; flowing the heated liquid fuel to a mixer at the inlet to reduce pressure of the heated liquid fuel, flash vaporize the heated liquid fuel and mix flash vaporized fuel with oxidant to produce a vaporized fuel-oxidant mixture; and detonating the mixture in the annular detonation chamber.
