The method detects a tooth from the signal generated by the sensor, identifies the tooth detected, triggers a timeout, and detects stoppage of the engine if the passage of a tooth adjacent to the tooth detected has not been detected before the end of the timeout. The value of the timeout is dependent on the tooth identified, and including: determining crankshaft angular position depending on the tooth identified, the value of the timeout dependent on the angular position of the crankshaft, determining the preferential stopping positions of the crankshaft and assigning a first timeout value for the preferential stopping positions and assigning at least a second value for the other positions of the crankshaft. The first timeout value being less than the second timeout value.

A second count associated with a second time threshold is performed, with this count being suspended when and for as long as a time between the passes of two successive teeth is below the second threshold, the engine being estimated to have stopped as soon as the counts have respectively reached the first and second thresholds.

When a catalyst temperature at the time engine start is requested is equal to or higher than a first threshold, a control device starts the internal combustion engine by at least one of the first start process and the second start process.

A control system includes a controller. The controller estimates the swing-back amount indicating the turning amount of the crankshaft in the reverse rotation direction until the crankshaft stops. The controller corrects the swing-back amount used for calculating the stop-time counter value based on a difference between the number of driving times calculated with reference to the map based on the calculated stop-time counter value and the value of the crank counter and the number of driving times calculated by increasing the number of driving times by one each time the high pressure system fuel pressure increases by the threshold or more.
