Method of Controlling Operation of an Exhaust Gas Treatment Apparatus

A method is disclosed for controlling an engine assembly comprising an internal combustion engine and an exhaust gas treatment apparatus. The aftertreatment assembly may require cleaning from time to time, and where this involves active thermal management of the aftertreatment assembly, the method involves performing the following steps: (a) imposing a first limit on engine speed; (b) awaiting an engine safe state; and (c) implementing a cleaning process comprising: (i) injecting fuel into the engine such that the fuel passes through the engine without combusting for the fuel to combust in the diesel oxidation catalyst so as to target an increase in exhaust gas temperature in the diesel oxidation catalyst; and (ii) removing the first limit on engine speed and targeting an engine speed set point, wherein the engine speed set point is at a higher speed than the first limit on engine speed.

The invention relates to a method to heat exhaust gases to a selected specific temperature by fuel injection control in an internal combustion engine (112), which engine comprises a control unit (115) registering the currently requested load and determining a required fuel amount in response to the requested load. The method involves registering low load operation of the internal combustion engine; registering an input from at least one exhaust after-treatment system (121) sensor indicating a detected condition; determining an exhaust temperature requirement for the detected condition and calculating a target exhaust temperature; selecting a group of cylinders to be regulated for achieving the target exhaust temperature; calculating a ratio for desired 1.sup.st and 2.sup.nd fuel amounts to be injected alternately in consecutive induction strokes for the selected group of cylinders to achieve the target exhaust temperature; wherein the ratio defines an offset between an increased 1.sup.st fuel amount to be injected in a cylinder of the selected group of cylinders for every second induction stroke, and a reduced 2.sup.nd fuel amount to be injected for the intermediate induction strokes.

Systems and methods for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) multipoint diagnosis

Systems and methods for diagnosing an exhaust aftertreatment system are provided. A controller determines, for each sensor of a plurality of sensors, one or more performance parameters based on measurement data obtained from the sensor that is indicative of a performance of the sensor or a component of the exhaust aftertreatment system. The controller determines, for each performance parameter, a corresponding degradation level indicator indicative of a performance degradation of the corresponding sensor or the corresponding component of the exhaust aftertreatment system. The controller can determine, for each degradation level indicator, a corresponding diagnosis threshold value for detecting an operational state of the corresponding sensor or the corresponding component of the exhaust aftertreatment system. The controller can determine a multipoint diagnosis threshold value based on the diagnosis threshold values, and determine an operational state of the aftertreatment system using the multipoint diagnosis threshold value.

Controller and control method for internal combustion engine

A controller executes a first suspending process or a second suspending process when a vehicle satisfies a predetermined first condition or a predetermined second condition. The controller executes an integration process that, during execution of the first suspending process or the second suspending process, obtains an integrated value of an intake air amount of the internal combustion engine from when the first suspending process or the second suspending process that is being executed was started. When the integrated value is greater than or equal to a threshold, the controller stops the first suspending process or the second suspending process that is being executed. When the amount of particular matter deposited in a filter is the same, a first threshold, which is the threshold for the first suspending process, is greater than a second threshold, which is the threshold for the second suspending process.
