Methods and system for controlling compressor surge

Systems and methods for operating a compressor and a compressor recirculation valve of a turbocharged engine to avoid the possibility of compressor surge are presented. The systems and methods position the compressor recirculation valve responsive to a compressor surge line that is based on two other compressor surge lines that may be a function of compressor pressure ratio and compressor flow.

A controller and a method for a hybrid drive, which includes an internal combustion engine and an electrical machine are provided. The internal combustion engine includes adjustment devices that deactivate the intake and exhaust valve opening actuation. The controller is designed in such a way that, in the case of at least one specified condition (such as regeneration during unfired overrun or in the case of electric travel, in particular in the case of operation with high activation frequency of the internal combustion engine, e.g., in charge sustaining or HEV operation), the intake and exhaust valves are kept at least approximately (preferably completely) closed at least approximately simultaneously while the internal combustion engine is unfired. The internal combustion engine must be connected to the electrical machine. If there is a disconnect clutch, the disconnect clutch is brought into the closed state or remains closed.

Method for increasing control performance of model predictive control cost functions

A method for controlling an actuator system of a motor vehicle includes utilizing a model predictive control (MPC) module with an MPC solver to determine optimal positions of one or more actuators of the actuator system. The method further includes receiving a plurality of actuator system parameters, and triggering the MPC solver to generate one or more control commands from plurality of actuator system parameters. The method further includes applying a cost function to reduce a steady-state tracking error in the one or more control commands from the MPC solver and applying the one or more control commands to alter positions of the one or more actuators, and applying a penalty term to the steady-state predictions of positions of the plurality of actuators to limit a difference between a steady-state prediction of the actuator system and a solution from the MPC solver.

Methods and system for managing fuel cut off for hybrid vehicles

Systems and methods for operating an engine that may selectively enter and exit a fuel cut-off mode are described. In one example, the method holds the engine in the fuel cut-off mode even though a propulsive effort pedal is applied. An electric machine may provide torque to a vehicle driveline while the engine is in the fuel cut-off mode.

A supplemental fuel system includes a supplemental fuel tank, an electronic valve, a voltage sensor, and a controller. The supplemental fuel tank is configured to store a supplemental fuel configured to supplement a primary fuel used by an engine. The electronic valve is configured to be positioned between the supplemental fuel tank and an air supply system for the engine. The voltage sensor is configured to acquire voltage data from a power supply indicative of a voltage of the power supply. The power supply is configured to receive power from an alternator driven by the engine. The controller is configured to control the electronic valve such that the electronic valve is (i) closed in response to the voltage being less than a voltage threshold and (ii) open or openable in response to the voltage being greater than the voltage threshold.

Control apparatus for hybrid electric vehicle

A CPU performs a regeneration process of stopping combustion control in one or some of cylinders and making the air-fuel ratio of an air-fuel mixture in the other cylinders or cylinder richer than a theoretical air-fuel ratio, when the amount of PM collected by a GPF increases. In performing the regeneration process, the CPU itself compensates for a fall in the output of an internal combustion engine by gradually increasing the filling efficiency of the other cylinders or cylinder. It should be noted, however, that since the output of the internal combustion engine temporarily fluctuates, the CPU compensates for the fluctuations through the use of a second motor-generator. The CPU varies the retardation amount of a timing of starting the regeneration process with respect to a timing of gradually increasing the filling efficiency, in accordance with the state of a battery.

A vehicular internal combustion engine system includes an internal combustion engine and an electric intake air supply device. The internal combustion engine is shifted into a stoichiometric combustion mode, and a lean combustion mode. The electric intake air supply device is driven by an on-vehicle battery, and employed to contribute a part of intake air quantity at least under a specific operating condition when in the lean combustion mode. A control method includes: determining a requested electric energy of the electric intake air supply device for a shift into the lean combustion mode in response to a shift from a stoichiometric combustion operation region into a lean combustion operation region; and continuing the stoichiometric combustion mode, without operation of the electric intake air supply device, when the on-vehicle battery is in an insufficient state of charge with respect to the requested electric energy.

Method and device for evaluating the compression of the cylinders of an internal combustion engine

A method for evaluating the compression of the cylinders of an internal combustion engine of a vehicle having an electric starter motor and a respective starting battery, comprising: start capturing the battery voltage signal when the starter motor stars to rotate the internal-combustion engine so as to initiate operation of the engine under its own power; cease capturing the battery voltage signal when the engine enters operation under its own power; process the captured voltage signal for the location of local minimums; calculate the time difference between consecutive local minimums; detect if there is a variation of time between the calculated differences higher than a predetermined threshold between any said calculated time differences; and, if there is such variation, signal a potential engine malfunction. Also provided is a device for accomplishing the foregoing.
