A piston for an internal combustion engine is provided. The piston includes a lower part joined to an upper part, for example by friction welding with inertia. The upper part presents a combustion surface and an undercrown surface. The piston also includes a cooling gallery surface provided by the upper part and the lower part. The cooling gallery surface surrounds a volume of space for containing a cooling media. The piston can include serrations in the cooling gallery surface and/or undercrown surface to increase surface area and thus reduce the temperature of the piston. The piston can also include shaped weld curls, instead of or in addition to the serrations, which also increase surface area and reduce the temperature of the piston.

PISTON HAVING AN UNDERCROWN SURFACE WITH COATING AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURE THEREOF

A vehicle internal combustion piston and method of construction thereof are provided. The piston includes piston body extending along a central longitudinal axis, having an upper combustion wall forming an upper combustion surface and an undercrown surface opposite the upper combustion surface. An annular ring belt region depends from the upper combustion surface, a pair of skirt panels depend from the ring belt region, and a pair of pin bosses depend from the undercrown surface to provide laterally spaced pin bores aligned along a pin bore axis for receipt of a wrist pin. The undercrown surface forms a central undercrown region, and a portion of either an open outer cooling gallery, a sealed outer cooling gallery, or an outer galleryless region. A coating comprising a base layer including nickel and a catalyst layer including rhodium is applied to the undercrown surface.

The piston crown has a thickness of less than 4 mm and includes valve pockets with an axial clearance between the valve pockets and an uppermost ring groove of less than 1.5 mm. The pin bosses have an axial thickness of less than 3.7% of a bore diameter, which is the largest outer diameter of the piston, measured between a pin bore and the crown at 1 mm from an inner face forming the pin bore. Each pin boss has a radial thickness of less than 3% of the bore diameter measured between the pin bore and a lower end of the pin boss. An undercrown surface presents a projected area of less than 45% of a total piston bore area, wherein the total piston bore area is BD.sup.2/4, BD being the bore diameter.

Galleryless piston with improved pocket cooling

A galleryless piston having a reduced temperature during operation in an engine is provided. The piston includes an upper wall with an exposed undercrown surface. A ring belt and pin bosses depend from the upper wall, and a pair of skirt panels depend from the ring belt and are coupled to the pin bosses by struts. The piston includes an inner undercrown region and outer pockets extending along the undercrown surface. The inner undercrown region is surrounded by the skirt panels, the struts, and the pin bosses. Each outer pocket is surrounded by one of the pin bosses, a portion of the ring belt, and the struts adjacent the one pin boss. A plurality of holes extend through the pin bosses and/or the struts from the inner undercrown region to one of the outer pockets to convey cooling oil from the inner undercrown region to the outer pockets.

Galleryless piston with improved pocket cooling

A galleryless piston having a reduced temperature during operation in an engine is provided. The piston includes an upper wall with an exposed undercrown surface. A ring belt and pin bosses depend from the upper wall, and a pair of skirt panels depend from the ring belt and are coupled to the pin bosses by struts. The piston includes an inner undercrown region and outer pockets extending along the undercrown surface. The inner undercrown region is surrounded by the skirt panels, the struts, and the pin bosses. Each outer pocket is surrounded by one of the pin bosses, a portion of the ring belt, and the struts adjacent the one pin boss. A plurality of holes extend through the pin bosses and/or the struts from the inner undercrown region to one of the outer pockets to convey cooling oil from the inner undercrown region to the outer pockets.

PISTON AND MANUFACTURING METHOD THEREOF

A piston manufactured by combining different materials which is free from the problem of interfacial fracture in the interface between the different materials, and a manufacturing method for such a piston. The piston of an internal combustion engine includes a first portion containing a first material, a second portion containing a second material different from the first material, and a boundary portion containing both the first material and the second material, and joining the first portion and the second portion to each other by being provided between the first portion and the second portion by a prescribed thickness, wherein a composition ratio of the first material progressively decreases and a composition ratio of the second material progressively increases in the boundary portion from a side of the first portion to a side of the second portion. The boundary portion may be made by a layered additive manufacturing method.
