An engine includes: an NOx catalyst and an SCR catalyst in an exhaust passage; an excess air ratio change device that changes an excess air ratio of an exhaust gas; and a reducing agent supply device that supplies a reducing agent for SCR including a material for NH.sub.3 or NH.sub.3 to a portion between the NOx catalyst and the SCR catalyst in the exhaust passages. The engine controls the reducing agent supply device in such a manner that a quantity of the reducing agent for SCR to be supplied from the reducing agent supply device to the exhaust passage 40 becomes small when the excess air ratio of the exhaust gas during regeneration control to regenerate the NOx catalyst is small, as compared to when the excess air ratio of the exhaust gas during regeneration control to regenerate the NOx catalyst is large.

Method for regulating the surface temperature of a glow plug

A method for regulating the surface temperature of a glow plug is described, wherein the electrical resistance of the glow plug is continuously measured and used to regulate the surface temperature of the glow plug to a target temperature or a target resistance corresponding to the target temperature by means of a resistance temperature characteristic. According to this disclosure, it is provided that the resistance temperature characteristic used for the temperature regulation is adjusted as a function of the present motor operating state.

Combustion system

Embodiments herein provide a combustion system comprising a combustion chamber having a catalyst bed, and a vessel for storing a propellant at a predefined pressure. The vessel comprising a first valve for controlling a flow of the propellant over the catalyst bed inside the combustion chamber and an input provided at the first valve, for injecting the propellant inside the combustion chamber at a predefined duration of injection for each cycle of injection. A predefined quantity of the propellant is injected in each cycle of the injection. The combustion system further comprises one or more glow plugs for maintaining a predefined temperature within the catalyst bed and an ignition glow plug for providing a source of ignition for combustion of the propellant inside the combustion chamber.

A control apparatus (100) controls a diesel engine (10). A glow plug (32) which can detect cylinder pressure is provided on the engine (10). An ECU (70) computes a parameter related to a change in cylinder pressure obtained from the glow plug (32). The ECU (70) controls fuel injection timing such that the parameter falls within a target range when combustion in the engine (10) is switched from premixed combustion to diffusion combustion.

An autonomous glow driver system for radio controlled (RC) engines. Aspects of the system include a connector that securely attaches to the glow plug to maintain good electrical contact with the glow plug and reduce signal noise and using a current and differential amplifiers to determine the temperature of the glow element and the RPMs of the glow engine from a voltage signal (obtained via the connector) that varies with the temperature as induced changes in the resistance of the glow element occur. Using the data of temperature, non-running RPM, and running RPM to control operation of the glow driver leads to a very reliable approach to automatically activating the glow driver to maintain the combustion chamber temperature of the glow engine at a selected level because RPM is indicative of a rotating engine whereas temperature is not.
