Satellite System
A satellite system operates at altitudes between 100 and 350 km relying on vehicles including a self-sustaining ion engine to counteract atmospheric drag to maintain near-constant orbit dynamics. The system operates at altitudes that are substantially lower than traditional satellites, reducing size, weight and cost of the vehicles and their constituent subsystems such as optical imagers, radars, and radio links. The system can include a large number of lower cost, mass, and altitude vehicles, enabling revisit times substantially shorter than previous satellite systems. The vehicles spend their orbit at low altitude, high atmospheric density conditions that have heretofore been virtually impossible to consider for stable orbits. Short revisit times at low altitudes enable near-real time imaging at high resolution and low cost. At such altitudes, the system has no impact on space junk issues of traditional LEO orbits, and is self-cleaning in that space junk or disabled craft will de-orbit.
Ignition process for narrow channel hall thruster
Disclosed is a closed drift, narrow channel Hall thruster configured to operate at powers <30 W. The thruster includes a thruster body and a neutralizing cathode. The thruster body includes a magnetic circuit including a magnetic source and two magnetic poles, a metallic, annular thruster channel formed by the magnetic poles with a downstream channel width smaller than about 3 mm and an upstream channel width greater than the downstream channel width, an anode positioned at the channel's entry, and a gas distributor configured to release a propellant gas into the thruster channel. The magnetic circuit is configured to generate a magnetic field in the thruster channel for trapping electrons therein. The channel walls (the magnetic poles) are under bias potential. The anode and the cathode are configured to generate a substantially axial electric field in the thruster channel. In operation, propellant gas atoms ionized by trapped electrons in the thruster channel, accelerate axially, exiting via the channel's exit.
Intelligent control gas suction-type electric propulsion system applicable to multi-flow regimes
An intelligent control gas suction-type electric propulsion system applicable to multi-flow regimes: an ultra-low orbit rare gas is used as a working medium for attitude orbit control and resistance compensation propulsion, the gas is collected and inputted into an intelligent feedback pressurization system by means of a parabolic gas intake duct, intelligent feedback and pressurization are performed on the gas working medium by a molecular pump and a gas pump and the medium is stored in a working fluid storage tank so as to supply a hybrid thruster system that consists of seven sets of electric thrusters to generate thrust, which may achieve multiple thrust modes, and achieve the purpose of attitude orbit control and resistance compensation.
LIQUID METAL ION SOURCE
A liquid metal ion source, in particular an ion thruster for propulsion of a spacecraft, comprises a reservoir for the liquid metal, an emitter penetrating a front wall of the reservoir for drawing liquid metal from the reservoir and emitting ions of the liquid metal, and an extractor supported with respect to the reservoir and facing the emitter for extracting and accelerating the ions from the emitter, wherein the reservoir is provided with advancing means for creating an electromagnetic field within the liquid metal in the reservoir to exert a force on the liquid metal in a direction towards the emitter.
Scalable power processing units for hall-effect thruster propulsion systems and terrestrial systems
Scalable power processing units (PPUs) for Hall-effect thrusters (HETs) and terrestrial systems are disclosed. A technique for current estimation may be employed on each output of parallel isolated discharge supply modules (DSMs) to force proper current/load sharing between the DSMs. A flyback power supply may be used that performs the dual functions of a cathode keeper plasma ignitor and sustainer. The flyback power supply may be tuned for a high no-load direct current (DC) output voltage to achieve cathode keeper ignition rather than requiring a separate ignitor supply, which reduces circuit complexity. To address requirements for higher voltage DC ignition than are achievable with a flyback power supply alone, a supplemental DC ignitor may be placed in parallel with the flyback power supply of some embodiments. Such simplified PPU architectures may provide a high efficiency, low part count, scalable architecture suitable for more compact and lower cost system designs.

In an aspect of the invention there is provided a plasma thruster device comprising: an electrically insulating substrate, said substrate comprising one or more feed channels for feeding an electrically conductive liquid to a bridge structure; said substrate further provided with electrical terminals; said bridge structure configured to form, when provided with the electrically conductive liquid, an electrical conducting bridge; said bridge structure configured to form contact areas in electrical contact with said electrical terminals, said bridge structure thereby connecting the contact areas, said bridge structure arranged for forming a plasma of said electrically conductive liquid, when the electrically conductive liquid is ionized by a current peak flow circuit that contacts the contact areas via said electrical terminals.
Device and method for regulating a gas flow rate
Device and method for regulating a flow rate of gas intended to supply a propulsion apparatus for a spacecraft comprising xenon tank, a circuit comprising a withdrawing pipe having an upstream end connected to the tank and a downstream end connected to a propulsion member, the withdrawing pipe comprising an isolation first valve, a regulating second valve and a member for measuring the pressure downstream of the regulating second valve. The regulating second valve regulates the flow rate and/or the determined pressure according to the pressure measured. The regulating second valve is a proportional valve of electrically operated variable throughout PCV type.
TANK FOR CONTAINING A COMPONENT FLUID, SUCH AS A PROPELLANT
The present invention relates to a tank for containing a component fluid or a mixture of components.
Dynamically Adjusted Alignment Between Payload and Spacecraft
In a method of facilitating flight operations, a payload is coupled to a spacecraft via a payload interface. The relative alignment of the payload and the spacecraft is dynamically adjusted (e.g., for thrust alignment) while the payload remains coupled to the spacecraft.
