There is provided a compact turbine-compressor assembly 25. The turbine-compressor assembly 25 includes a turbine wheel 39 with one or more turbine blades 41 and a compressor wheel 47 that includes one or more compressor blades 49. The compressor wheel 47 is concentric with the turbine wheel 39. Furthermore, the compressor wheel 47 and the turbine wheel 39 are not located at opposite ends of a common axle with a medial portion of the axle distancing them apart, as is the case with prior art turbine-compressor assemblies that are known. In contrast, the turbine wheel 39 and the compressor wheel 47 are located adjacent to each other and in one embodiment they axially overlap each other so that one nests within the other to thereby provide a compact arrangement. The turbine-compressor assembly 25 includes a first fluid path 67 which is configured to convey fluid, which will typically be air, through the turbine blades 41. The turbine-compressor assembly 25 also includes a second fluid path 77 which is configured to convey fluid, which will typically be air, through the compressor blades. The turbine-compressor assembly 25 is arranged so that the first fluid path 67 is distinct from the second fluid path 77 and vice-versa.

A supercharging device is configured to increase an amount of intake air of an engine of a vehicle, where the supercharging device includes a chamber formed to be open in an ejecting direction of a compressor outside an ejecting portion of a compressor housing of the compressor, and an air adding device configured to supply air not compressed by the compressor to the chamber.

TURBO FLUID MACHINE

A turbo fluid machine includes a rotary shaft configured to rotate in one rotational direction, and a thrust foil bearing that includes: a plurality of bump foils each having a corrugated shape and a plurality of top foils each having a bearing surface that faces a thrust collar. Each bump foil is divided into an outer peripheral foil and an inner peripheral foil in a radial direction of the rotary shaft. Ridges on the outer peripheral foil are inclined in the other rotational direction of the rotary shaft while extending from an edge of the outer peripheral foil adjacent to an inner peripheral side toward an outer peripheral side, and the ridges on the inner peripheral foil are inclined in the other rotational direction while extending from an edge of the inner peripheral foil adjacent to the outer peripheral side toward the inner peripheral side.

Bearing Carrier

A bearing assembly installed within a turbocharger housing between a turbine wheel and a compressor impeller mounted for rotation together on a turbocharger shaft may include a journal bearing disposed on a corresponding portion of the turbocharger shaft, a thrust bearing having a thrust bearing surface, and a bearing carrier. The bearing carrier may include a carrier body, a carrier body bore extending axially through the carrier body and receiving the journal bearing therein, and a thrust bearing seat on the exterior of the carrier body facing the turbine wheel. The thrust bearing seat may have a complimentary shape to the thrust bearing surface of the thrust bearing, the thrust bearing disposed between the carrier body and the turbine wheel and engaging the thrust bearing seat. The bearing assembly may further include an anti-thrust bearing surface facing the compressor impeller, and an anti-thrust bearing mounted to the anti-thrust bearing surface.

TRACTION DRIVE FUEL CELL PUMP

Disclosed is an air pump for a fuel cell that utilizes a speed-reduction traction drive so that a low speed electric motor can be used to drive a high-speed rotodynamic compressor. The rotodynamic compressor is an efficient air pump, but operates at high speeds that would require a specialized high-speed electric motor. The speed-reduction traction drive couples to the compressor and provides a low-speed output that is connected to a lower speed electric motor.

Adjustable-trim centrifugal compressor, and turbocharger having same

A centrifugal compressor for a turbocharger includes an inlet-adjustment mechanism in an air inlet for the compressor, operable to move between an open position and a closed position in the air inlet. The inlet-adjustment mechanism includes a variable-geometry conical mechanism comprising a plurality of vanes that in the closed position collectively form a frusto-conical inlet member having a trailing edge inner diameter that is smaller than an inner diameter of the shroud surface of the compressor housing at the inducer portion of the compressor wheel such that an effective diameter of the air inlet at the inducer portion is determined by the trailing edge inner diameter of the variable-geometry conical mechanism. The vanes in the open position are pivoted radially outwardly so as to increase the trailing edge inner diameter of the inlet member and thereby increase the effective diameter of the air inlet at the inducer portion.
