Passive and semi-passive inlet-adjustment mechanisms for compressor, and turbocharger having same
A centrifugal compressor for a turbocharger includes a passive or semi-passive inlet-adjustment mechanism in an air inlet for the compressor, operable to move between an open position and a closed position solely by aerodynamic forces on the mechanism. The inlet-adjustment mechanism includes a plurality of flexible vanes collectively forming a duct, and an effective diameter of the air inlet at the inducer portion of the compressor wheel is determined by a trailing edge inside diameter of the duct. The vanes are movable solely or in part by aerodynamic forces exerted on the vanes by the air flowing to the compressor wheel. The duct has a tapering configuration when the vanes are in a relaxed state, but under aerodynamic force the vanes flex outwardly and increase the trailing edge inside diameter of the duct, thereby increasing an effective diameter of the air inlet.
Centrifugal compressor with recirculation passage
An example centrifugal compressor includes a housing that defines an inlet chamber and includes first and second openings that define a recirculation passage in fluid communication with the inlet chamber. An impeller is disposed within the housing and is rotatable about a longitudinal axis to draw fluid into the inlet chamber. The first and second openings are at different axial locations along the longitudinal axis. A plurality of inlet guide vanes are rotatable and situated in the inlet chamber. The centrifugal compressor includes a ring and a controller for moving the ring along the longitudinal axis between a first position and a second position when rotating the inlet guide vanes. The ring obstructs at least one of the first and second openings more in the second position than in the first position.
TRANSLATING INLET FOR ADJUSTING AIRFLOW DISTORTION IN GAS TURBINE ENGINE
Systems and methods for adjusting airflow distortion in a gas turbine engine using a translating inlet assembly are provided. In one embodiment, a core engine of a gas turbine engine can include a compressor section, a combustion section, and a turbine section in series flow and defining at least in part an engine airflow path. The compressor section can include an inner flowpath surface. A core casing can enclose the core engine. A forward end of the core casing can include a translating inlet assembly moveable between a first position and a second position. The translating inlet assembly and the inner flowpath surface can together define an inlet to an engine airflow path. A translating inlet assembly can define a first inlet area in the first position and a second inlet area in the second position, the first inlet area being greater than the second inlet area.
ACTIVE SWIRL DEVICE FOR TURBOCHARGER COMPRESSOR
Methods and systems are provided for mitigating noise generated by a compressor operating at low flow rates. A swirl device with two concentric flow passages upstream of the compressor directs intake air flow to the compressor through two different flow paths, depending on air flow rates. Angled swirl vanes at an outlet of the swirl device pre-whirl the air flowing to the compressor to reduce noise generation at low air flow rates.
Adjustable compressor trim
An assembly can include a compressor housing, an adjustable wall disposed within the compressor housing that defines an air inlet to an inducer portion of a compressor wheel, and an adjustment mechanism to adjust the wall and thereby adjust at least a diameter of the air inlet. Various other examples of devices, assemblies, systems, methods, etc., are also disclosed.
Adjustable-trim centrifugal compressor, and turbocharger having same
A centrifugal compressor for a turbocharger includes an inlet-adjustment mechanism in an air inlet for the compressor, operable to move between an open position and a closed position in the air inlet. The inlet-adjustment mechanism includes an axially elongated ring. In the open position, the radially outer surface of the ring is spaced from a tapering inner surface of the air inlet so that air can flow in an annular passage between the tapering surface and the ring. In the closed position, the ring abuts the tapering surface to close off the annular passage, whereby the effective inlet diameter is then defined by the inner diameter of the ring at its trailing edge. Movement of the inlet-adjustment mechanism from the open position to the closed position is effective to shift the compressor's surge line to lower flow rates.
CENTRIFUGAL COMPRESSOR
A centrifugal compressor includes: a housing including an intake flow path; a compressor impeller arranged in the intake flow path; a movable portion arranged upstream of the compressor impeller in a flow of an intake air; and a groove formed in an area other than a surface located on a downstream side in the flow of the intake air in the movable portion.
ESTIMATION DEVICE, VACUUM VALVE, AND VACUUM PUMP
An estimation device for estimating a process gas condition in a system for pumping gas from a vacuum chamber into which the gas is injected to perform a treatment process by a vacuum pump attached to the vacuum chamber through a vacuum valve, comprises: a computer having a processor and a memory, wherein the computer estimates a first process gas condition including an injected gas type and a gas flow rate based on correlation data between a valve body opening degree of the vacuum valve and an effective exhaust speed of the system regarding a predetermined gas type and a chamber pressure of the vacuum chamber.
THROTTLE VALVE FOR A CENTRIFUGAL COMPRESSOR
A throttle valve for a centrifugal compressor includes a body having a central passage and one or more diverter flow paths. The central passage is formed by an inner surface of the body, each diverter flow path has an inlet and an outlet, and the one or more diverter flow paths are configured to induce a swirl within a fluid flow through the central passage while a portion of the fluid flow passes through the one or more diverter flow paths. The throttle valve also includes at least one blade disposed within the central passage. The at least one blade is configured to direct the portion of the fluid flow to the inlets of the one or more diverter flow paths while the at least one blade is in a partially open position.
TURBOCHARGER HAVING ADJUSTABLE-TRIM CENTRIFUGAL COMPRESSOR INCLUDING AIR INLET WALL HAVING CAVITIES FOR SUPPRESSION OF NOISE AND FLOW FLUCTUATIONS
A compressor for a turbocharger includes an inlet-adjustment mechanism in an air inlet for the compressor, operable to move between an open position and a closed position in the air inlet. The compressor housing upstream of the inlet-adjustment mechanism defines a series of acoustic cavities, and openings are defined in the compressor housing wall leading into the acoustic cavities. The openings and cavities are aimed at mitigating noise and flow pulsation in the air inlet caused when the inlet-adjustment mechanism is adjusted to the closed position to effectively reduce the inlet diameter approaching the compressor wheel.
