Controlling extent of TBC sheet spall

A method of controlling an extent of a thermal barrier coating (TBC) sheet spall and a hot gas path (HGP) component are disclosed. The method provides an HGP component having a body with an exterior surface. Controlling the extent of the TBC sheet spall includes forming a TBC over a selected portion of the exterior surface of the body. The TBC includes a plurality of segments in a cellular pattern. Each segment is defined by one or more slots in the TBC, and each segment has a predefined area such that the extent of the TBC sheet spall is limited by the predefined area of each of the plurality of segments that constitute the TBC sheet spall.

A hot gas path component assembly includes a first component portion that includes a first set of interlocking features and a second component portion that includes a second set of interlocking features mechanically coupled to the first set of interlocking features. A fill material is disposed at an interface between at least one surface of the first set of interlocking features and at least one surface of the second set of interlocking features. The fill material is disposed during a joining process. The second component portion is joined to the first component portion via both the fill material and the first and second sets of interlocking features.

Method and apparatus for improving turbine blade sealing in a gas turbine engine

A system and method for improving sealing at a turbine blade tip shroud, while reducing weight associated with the improved sealing is disclosed. The gas turbine blade incorporates a tip shroud having one or more pockets located therein, where the one or more pockets remove weight from the shroud, thus reducing load on the blade attachment generated by additional sealing at the turbine blade shroud. Methods for incorporating the one or more tip shrouds in a new turbine blade or a repaired turbine blade are also disclosed.

Methods for forming airfoils, core assemblies, and airfoils for gas turbine engines are described. The methods include forming an airfoil body about a core assembly configured to define one or more internal cavities of the airfoil body, the core assembly comprising at least core structure having a purge slot protrusion extending from a portion of the core structure, removing the core assembly from the airfoil body to form one or more internal cavities, wherein at least one internal cavity has a cavity extension define by the purge slot protrusion, and forming a squealer pocket in a tip of the formed airfoil body, wherein a cavity purge slot is formed at the cavity extension to fluidly connect the respect internal cavity with the squealer pocket.

A blade for mounting on a rotor disc of a gas turbine engine includes platform segments between a airfoil and blade root and extending laterally from the blade, the platform segment having a curved profile defining a platform recess on a root side of the platform segment, the recess configured to cooperate with recesses of adjacent blades to define a blade pocket. A recessed region is defined in a rear surface of the blade root, and is configured to receive a complementary projection of the rotor disc upon mounting the blade on the rotor disc. The recessed region has a surface configured to abut a corresponding surface on the projection of the rotor disc to form a face seal. Methods of manufacturing such a rotor disc and of sealing a circumferential joint between such blades and the rotor disc are also disclosed.

A pre-swirl nozzle carrier for a gas turbine engine, includes: a wall having front and rear sides, and a multiplicity of pre-swirl nozzles formed in the wall and which each have a flow passage, wherein the flow passage has an inlet opening at the front side and an outlet opening at the rear side. The flow passages are provided and designed to discharge air, which has flowed in via the inlet opening, with swirl from the outlet opening. It is provided that the inlet opening is surrounded by a periphery which, at least in certain sections, has a region with a convex curvature adjacent to the flow passage and has a region with a concave curvature adjacent to said region with a convex curvature. The invention furthermore relates to a method for producing a pre-swirl nozzle in a pre-swirl nozzle carrier.

System and method for performing operations on an engine

A system is provided for performing an operation on a component of an engine. The component includes a first side positioned within an interior of the engine. The system includes a first robotic arm defining a first distal end and including a first utility member positioned at the first distal end, the first robotic arm moveable to the interior of the engine to a location operably adjacent to the first side of the component; and a second robotic arm defining a second distal end and including a second utility member positioned at the second distal end, the second robotic arm also moveable to the interior of the engine to facilitate the first and second utility members performing the operation on the component of the engine.
