Valve assembly for an active clearance control system

A valve assembly for an active clearance control (ACC) system in a gas turbine engine. The assembly comprises a first valve disc positioned within a first outlet duct, a second valve disc positioned within the second outlet duct, and a shaft coupled to the first and second valve discs such that rotation of the shaft rotates both the first and second valve discs within the first and second outlet ducts, respectively. A flow control member in the second outlet duct surrounds the second valve disc, and is configured to restrict fluid flow passing through the second outlet duct to a greater extent than the fluid flow passing through the first outlet duct for a given degree of rotation of the first and second valve discs. A corresponding ACC system, gas turbine and method is also provided.

The invention relates to a system and a method for storing electrical energy which are based on a closed thermodynamic cycle. They make it possible to store electrical energy in a very efficient, cost-effective, and safe manner. No environmentally hazardous or expensive materials are required. The system comprises a compressor, a turbine, and two packed-bed storage units which are operated at different temperature levels.

In order to load the packed-bed storage units, the cycle is operated as a counterclockwise heat pump process. In this process, the heat generated at the outlet of the compressor is expanded at a high temperature level into a first packed-bed storage unit and stored therein. The “cold” produced during the subsequent expansion of the gaseous working medium in a turbine is stored in a second packed-bed storage unit. This requires mechanical energy which is provided by an electrical machine. In order to discharge the energy storage system, the cycle is operated in reverse (i.e., as a clockwise cycle). Before entering the compressor, the working medium is cooled with the cold stored in the second packed-bed storage unit and, after compression, absorbs the heat from the high-temperature packed-bed storage system. The hot working medium at high pressure is expanded by means of the turbine and thus energy is generated.

A method of forming a ceramic matrix composite component having an internal cooling circuit includes wrapping at least a first sheet around a first mandrel, wrapping at least a second sheet around a second mandrel, creating a first plurality of holes in the first sheet corresponding to a plurality of openings in the first mandrel, creating a second plurality of holes in the second sheet corresponding to a plurality of openings in the second mandrel, aligning the first mandrel and the second mandrel such that the first plurality of holes face and are aligned with the second plurality of holes, wrapping at least a third sheet around both the first mandrel and second mandrel to form a preform, the preform comprising each of the first sheet, the second sheet, and the third sheet, and densifying the preform. The first sheet, second sheet, and third sheet are formed from a ceramic fiber material.

SYSTEMS FOR FUEL INJECTORS WITH FUEL AIR HEAT EXCHANGERS

A system includes an air manifold, a fuel manifold, and a plurality of fuel injectors. At least one of the fuel injectors includes a heat exchanger portion for supplying compressed, cooled air form the heat exchanger portion to the air manifold. An air valve is operatively connected to an outlet of the air manifold for controlling release of air from the air manifold. A controller is operatively connected to the air valve, wherein the controller includes machine readable instructions configured to control the air valve to regulate flow of air through the air valve based on fuel temperatures in the fuel channel. The machine readable instructions can be configured to cause the controller to flow air through the air valve in a heat exchange mode if a fuel temperature in the fuel injectors is below a predetermined fuel temperature.
