The fan casing assembly for the turbine engine can include an annular fan casing with a peripheral wall having a flow path defined through the casing. A fan casing cooler can mount along the peripheral wall in order to confront a cooling fluid flow within the flow path in order to cool a fluid through the fan casing cooler.
Device for opening or closing a seal set of a valve
A device for opening or closing a seal seat of a valve arranged in a pipe for liquid or gaseous media includes a one-time only activation of the valve using a shape memory actuator. The shape memory actuator changes its external shape abruptly when a transformation temperature is reached that is dependent upon its alloy composition. The transformation temperature can be generated by a controllable electrical heating device of the device.
SHAPE MEMORY ALLOY VARIABLE STIFFNESS AIRFOIL
An aerostructure is provided. The aerostructure may comprise an airfoil extending from a leading edge to a trailing edge, the airfoil comprising a stiffness and a camber, and a shape memory alloy (SMA) mechanically coupled to the airfoil via a resin, the SMA configured to be coupled to a current source, wherein at least one of the stiffness or the camber changes in response to a phase change of the SMA.
SHAPE MEMORY ALLOY ACTUATORS AND THERMAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS INCLUDING THE SAME
Shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators and thermal management systems including the same. An SMA actuator includes an SMA lifting tube and a process fluid conduit configured to convey a process fluid through the SMA lifting tube. The SMA actuator assumes a conformation that is based on the temperature of the process fluid. The SMA lifting tube includes a first end and a second end configured to translate relative to the first end at least partially along a lateral direction. A thermal management system is configured to regulate a temperature of a process fluid. The thermal management system includes a heat exchanger that at least partially defines a heat transfer region, a process fluid conduit configured to convey the process fluid through the heat transfer region, and an actuator assembly including the SMA actuator. The actuator assembly is configured to selectively position the heat exchanger within a thermal management fluid flow.
AIR TURBINE STARTER CONTAINMENT SYSTEM
An air turbine starter for starting an engine, comprising a housing having an interior surface defining an interior, at least one turbine member rotatably mounted within the interior about a rotational axis, and having a plurality of circumferentially spaced blades, and a containment structure radially overlying and circumferentially surrounding at least a portion of the at least one turbine member.
VIBRATION ISOLATION FOR ROTATING MACHINES
A rotating machine system can include a rotating machine. The rotating machine system can include a housing. The housing can include an inner surface. The housing can surround at least a portion of the rotating machine. The inner surface of the housing can be spaced from the rotating machine such that a space is defined therebetween. The rotating machine system can include one or more super elastic wires. The one or more super elastic wires can be positioned in the space and can be operatively connected to the rotating machine and the inner surface of the housing. The one or more super elastic wires can reduce vibration within the rotating machine system.
GEARBOX FOR A GAS TURBINE ENGINE UTILIZING SHAPE MEMORY ALLOY DAMPERS
An epicyclic gearbox is configured to transfer rotational motion between a first rotating component and a second rotating component of the gas turbine engine. The gearbox includes a centrally located sun gear, two or more planet gears circumscribing the sun gear, and a ring gear circumscribing the plurality of planet gears. The gearbox is configured such that the sun gear is drivingly coupled to the first rotating component, such that rotation of the sun gear causes rotation of each planet gear, and such that the ring gear rotates relative to the plurality of planet gears. The gearbox includes one or more shape memory alloy dampers provided in association with the sun gear, the ring gear, and/or the plurality of planet gears. The shape memory alloy damper(s) is configured in order to reduce vibrations transferred through the epicyclic gearbox to the frame, the first rotating component, and/or the second rotating component.
VARIABLE STIFFNESS DAMPER SYSTEM
A variable stiffness damper system including an inner spring positioned between a first wall and a second wall, in which the inner spring includes a first member and a second member each coupled together at a distal end by an inner bumper. The first member and the second member are each contoured toward one another. The first member, the second member, and the inner bumper form a cavity therebetween. An outer spring is positioned between the inner spring and the first wall or the second wall. The outer spring includes a spring arm contoured toward the inner spring. The outer spring includes an outer bumper positioned between the inner bumper and the first wall or the second wall. The inner bumper and the outer bumper are selectively couplable to one another based on a load applied to the damper system.
SMART ADDITIVELY MANUFACTURED HEAT EXCHANGER WITH ADAPTIVE PROFILE AND TURBULATOR
A heat exchanger element includes a body and at least one deformable surface feature disposed at an outer body surface of the body. A cross-section of the heat exchanger element is oriented parallel to a cross-sectional plane of the heat exchanger element. At least one of the body and the at least one surface feature is configured to selectively respond to a temperature change such that a physical characteristic of the heat exchanger element changes in response to a temperature change. The physical characteristic is selected from the group consisting of: a shape of the heat exchanger element, a surface area of the heat exchanger element, a surface roughness of the heat exchanger element, and combinations thereof.
Supressing vibrations of shafts using adjustable bearings
A bearing configured to actively damp vibration of a shaft in a turbine. In one implementation, the bearing can include actuating members that move in a manner that changes properties of fluid, typically a thin film of lubricant, disposed in the bearing to facilitate rotation of the shaft. These changes effectively manipulate the stiffness and damping of the thin film according to a time periodicity that matches a parametric anti-resonance of the bearing. In turn, the resulting interaction of vibrating modes is favorable to damp vibration amplitudes at critical speeds.
