An apparatus and method for playing a board game which includes at least two distinguishable sets of playing pieces, each set being assigned to one player of the game, a game surface set by the players from assigned surface tiles, and dice, a pair being assigned to each player of the game. Players set up the game surface, and thereafter playing pieces, in an order determined by each player rolling a pair of dice. Setup is thereby varied each game to provide a new challenge. Players, in order, act by moving playing pieces, jumping over opposing playing pieces and removing them, and attacking opposing playing pieces. Winning an attack involves having the highest score on a roll of the dice and the winner's piece remains on the game surface. A player wins if they are the only one with pieces remaining on the game surface.

An illuminated, three-dimensional tic-tac-toe game device is provided and includes a game board having nine posts arranged in a square. Each post includes three levels of play and a first switch and a second switch at each level. First and second game pieces are provided for use as X's and O's in the game. Each game piece includes translucent sides, a translucent top and an opaque bottom. First contacts are provided on each first game piece and are engageable with the first switches and second contacts are provided on each second game piece and are engageable with the second switches. An electronic circuit is provided for each possible combination of three of the same game pieces in a row either horizontally, vertically, transversely or diagonally. Lights are provided at each level within each post, either within each level of each post or inside a game piece arranged at the level. The electronic circuit activates the lights to illuminate through the translucent game pieces when one player establishes three of his game pieces in a row.

Also described are methods of playing the games in which players roll the dice to determine how many spaces they may move their respective token(s). A game and method for playing a game are provided which simulates car racing. The game is played by placing a number of position marking indicators onto a playing surface representing a race track having a pit row, a forward slide, a backward slide, a number of special instruction squares and a start/finish line. Each player takes turns moving their position marking indicators on the playing surface according to a roll of a pair of dice. Players landing on special instruction squares, slides, or card pickup locations will follow the instructions given the board or card. Gameplay is varied by allowing the players to draft other cars, and through special modifiers such as rubbing and roll cards. The game is won by the first player to complete the race by crossing the start/finish after a set number of laps and after visiting pit row at least one time.
