The brake mechanism includes a brake pad, movable in a first direction, a cylinder having a piston movable in a second direction, a lever rotary movable around a lever axis, the lever being connected to the piston, a cam element, arranged to convert a rotary motion of the lever around the lever axis, into a translation motion in the first direction, and a rod, expanding between the brake pad and the cam element. The lever, the cam element and the rod are housed in a housing. Considering a plane including the disc axis and the first direction, the lever axis is inclined relative to the plane, at an angle different from 90°.

To produce a combined service brake cylinder and spring-loaded brake cylinder for a vehicle brake system, force-actuation path characteristic curves of the brake system with the elements that can be actuated by a storage spring of the spring-loaded cylinder are measured/recorded under different operational conditions. Force-actuation characteristic curves of different storage springs for use in the spring-loaded cylinder are also measured/recorded. The minimum necessary actuation stroke of the piston of the spring-loaded cylinder and the minimum necessary spring force for a storage spring to effect a parking brake function are determined by the intersection of the force-actuation curves of the brake system with those of the storage springs. The storage spring that generates a sufficient actuation force under certain operating conditions and the dimensions resulting from the smallest possible piston actuation stroke are selected for producing the combined service brake cylinder and spring-loaded cylinder.

A cup is positioned in the sock and the cup is comprised of an air impermeable material to inhibit air from passing therethrough. The cup is aligned with the flow of air outwardly through the pressure release tube such that the cup directs the flow of air laterally through the sock. In this way the cup inhibits the flow of air from producing dust that would result if the air is blown onto the ground.

A heavy vehicle drum brake shoe guide and an assembly comprising the brake shoe guide are described. In one aspect, there is provided a brake shoe guide for attachment to a drum brake shoe by a pin fastener, to prevent brake shoe misalignment. There is also provided a brake shoe guide assembly including at least a brake shoe guide and a pin fastener for securing the brake shoe guide to a drum brake shoe. The brake shoe guide described herein is simple to fit to a standard, off the shelf brake shoe, and can be retrofitable to a brake shoe and/or brake assembly. Moreover, the brake shoe guide assembly described herein can retain the cam follower roller to the brake shoe, and act as an axle for the cam follower roller, eliminating the need for a separate retainer clip. Further still, the guide and the assembly of which it forms a part can be used with drums of various sizes.
