Torque converter and hydrokinetic torque coupling device having turbine-piston lockup clutch with flow restrictor, and related methods
09541181 · 2017-01-10 · ·

A torque converter features an impeller including an impeller shell and impeller blades, a turbine-piston including a turbine-piston shell and turbine blades, and a restrictor. The turbine-piston shell is axially displaceable relative to the impeller shell to position the torque converter (or a hydrokinetic torque coupling device containing the torque converter) into and out of lockup mode. The restrictor positioned radially outward of the impeller blades and the turbine blades at an opening of a fluid passage connecting the torus chamber to an environment outside the torque converter.

Folded seal retention plate with thrust surface

A seal retention plate for a torque converter, the plate comprising: an annular body portion having a first surface; a second surface opposite the first surface; an interior portion having at least one first hole; at least one radially outer tab extending from the interior portion and folded to contact the second surface so as to provide a thrust surface; and a center opening.

Captive clutch for vehicle transmission

A torque converter with a lockup clutch is provided with three oil passageways in and around the input shaft. One of the oil passageways provides oil to and from the converter for locking and unlocking the clutch via a piston. The piston moves away from the front cover of the torque converter to lock or apply the clutch and moves toward the front cover to release or unlock the clutch. A hydraulic circuit with control block is in fluid communication with the torque converter housing. The control block has three passages and two check valves to control fluid flow from the converter to the cooler, from the transmission to the cooler, and from the control block to the converter.

Torque converter with floating hub

A torque converter is provided that includes a front cover arranged to receive a torque, an impeller having an impeller shell non-rotatably connected to the cover, and a turbine in fluid communication with the impeller and including a turbine shell. A damper assembly is disposed axially between the front cover and the turbine shell. The damper assembly includes an output element including a first tooth; a cover plate disposed axially between the output element and the turbine shell; and a floating hub arranged to connect to a transmission input shaft. The cover plate is non-rotatably connected to the turbine shell. The floating hub includes a second tooth configured to rotationally engage the first tooth. The second tooth includes an extension disposed between the cover plate and the output element. The extension is configured to contact the output element to axially constrain the floating hub in a first axial direction.
