The inner coil spring is disposed in an interior of the outer coil spring. The inner coil spring has a shorter free length than the outer coil spring. The inner coil spring is chamfered on end surfaces of both ends thereof. The inner coil spring has an outer diameter set to be smaller at least at an endmost winding on each of the ends thereof than at other windings thereof.

The lockup control valve (70) is arranged on an outer side face (18B) of an intermediate casing (18) in a position of radially overlapping the transmission shaft (55) in a radial direction of the transmission shaft (55). Further, a casing side oil passage (76) constituting the lockup oil passage (75) is formed as a linear oil passage that linearly extends in the radial direction of the transmission shaft (55) between the lockup control valve (70) and the transmission shaft side oil passage (77).

Clutch systems for a torque converter

A torque converter comprises a cover configured to receive an input torque and an impeller having an impeller shell non-rotatably connected to the cover. A piston is disposed axially between the cover and the impeller. The piston is configured to axially displace to selectively engage a clutch and a seal plate is disposed axially between the piston and the cover. The seal plate is sealed to the cover. A first chamber is formed at least in part by the cover, the seal plate, and the piston. A second chamber is formed at least in part by the piston and the impeller shell.

A torque converter comprising a stator including a base and an impeller including: an impeller shell; and, a hydrostatic thrust bearing. The hydrostatic thrust bearing comprising: a first bearing surface facing the stator; a recess geometry arranged for maintaining at least one hydrostatic pressure region for preventing the first bearing surface from contacting the stator; and, a fluid pathway between the stator and the impeller.
