At least some implementations of a transmission gear shifter include a first body rotatable among multiple positions, a second body rotatable among multiple positions, a retainer and first and second actuators. The retainer is movable relative to the second body between a first position in which the retainer prevents rotation of the second body, and a second position in which the retainer permits rotation of the second body. The first actuator is coupled to the retainer to move the retainer between the first and second positions. And the second actuator provides a force on the second body to rotate the second body when the retainer is in the second position.

A shift-by-wire (SBW) column shifter for a vehicle includes a shift lever configured to be moved to shift gears. A shaft enables the shift lever to rotate the shaft about an axis. A lever detent is coupled to the shaft, enabling the shaft to rotate the lever detent about the axis. A rotatable magnet rotates as the lever detent rotates. A magnetic sensor senses the angular position of the lever detent due to the changes in magnetic characteristics of the magnet as it rotates. A processor can command an operating gear change based on the signal output from the magnet sensor.

Shift device

A shift device includes a knob that is rotatable to select one of a plurality of gear modes of a transmission of a vehicle and a cam member that engages a portion of the knob in a rotation direction of the knob. The cam member rotates integrally with the knob only when engaged with the portion of the knob. The shift device further includes a drive source that rotates the cam member and a controller. The controller controls the drive source to rotate the knob to an operation position corresponding to a predetermined gear mode if a particular condition is satisfied. The controller decreases a voltage applied to the drive source when the cam member is rotated in at least a pre-engagement section until the cam member engages the portion of the knob from the voltage applied when the cam member is rotated in other sections.

A lever detent is coupled to the shaft, enabling the shaft to rotate the lever detent about the axis. A slider magnet is constrained to move along a path, such as a linear path. The slider magnet has a groove that is engaged by a projection of the lever detent. Rotation of the lever detent about the axis is converted into movement of the slider magnet along the path via the engagement of the projection and the groove. A plurality of sensors are configured to output signals indicating a position of the slider magnet along the path to indicate a requested change in operating gear of the vehicle.
