A Gifford-McMahon (GM) type double-inlet pulse tube system providing cooling at cryogenic temperatures is provided. The system has a co-axial double-inlet valve that includes a base having an adjustable port, a fixed needle partially engaged in one end of the adjustable port, an adjustable needle partially engaged in another end of said adjustable port, and a body for housing the base, the fixed needle and the adjustable needle. The base is configured to be adjustable along an axial direction. The adjustable needle is arranged co-axially with the fixed needle. The adjustable port and the adjustable needle are configured to control an alternating current (AC) flow and a direct current (DC) flow between the stem port and the end port and to produce the DC flow in either direction between the stem port and the end port.

The cooling system can include a pump that circulates working fluid along a cooling loop between the rocket engine and a radiator. The cooling system can also utilize thermoacoustic, Stirling refrigeration, and/or heat pipe techniques. One or more reservoirs can be provided to store the working fluid, and in some forms a secondary reservoir can be provided to aid in management of a center of mass of the satellite. A fluid reaction loop can be provided in which working fluid is accelerated to impart a torque on the satellite. In some forms, the working fluid can be utilized as both a coolant and a propellant for the rocket engine. The electric rocket thruster can also include one or more internal pathways for the conveyance of working fluid.

A compressor system for a cryocooler includes a compressor unit that includes a compressor main body compressing a refrigerant gas of the cryocooler and a liquid-cooled heat exchanger cooling, through heat exchange with a cooling liquid, at least one of the refrigerant gas compressed by the compressor main body and an oil lubricating the compressor main body, a supply line through which the cooling liquid is supplied from a main chiller to the liquid-cooled heat exchanger, a collecting line through which the cooling liquid is collected from the liquid-cooled heat exchanger to the main chiller, and a backup chiller that is provided outside the compressor unit, circulates the cooling liquid to the liquid-cooled heat exchanger in place of or together with the main chiller, and includes a circulation pump and a cooler cooling the cooling liquid on an inlet side or outlet side of the pump.

Double-ended thermoacoustic heat exchanger

A thermoacoustic refrigeration assembly includes a resonating tube having a first end and a second end; a first mechanical oscillator at the first end; a second mechanical oscillator at the second end; and a thermoacoustic stack sandwich disposed along a length of the resonating tube through which gas travels. The stack sandwich includes a first outboard heat exchanger on a first side of the stack sandwich facing the first mechanical oscillator, a second outboard heat exchanger on a second side of the stack sandwich facing the second mechanical oscillator, and a center heat exchanger disposed between the first outboard heat exchanger and the second outboard heat exchanger.

Thermoacoustic device

A thermoacoustic device includes a process volume which is filled with a working fluid through which the acoustic wave propagates. The thermoacoustic device further includes an acoustic network comprising a tubular loop configured with a passage providing an opening in the loop and configured as acoustic circuit provided with a compliance volume, a thermo-acoustic core and an inertance volume. Within the loop, the thermoacoustic core is at a first side thereof adjacent to the passage at a first path length through the loop, and at its second side, opposite to the first side, the thermoacoustic core is at a second path length from the passage. The thermoacoustic device includes within the loop a spring-type partitioning element that is configured to close off the cross-section of the tube and to be impermeable for the working fluid while allowing transmission of pressure waves in the working fluid through the spring-type partitioning element.

SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR PROVIDING CONTINUOUS COOLING AT CRYOGENIC TEMPERATURES

Systems and methods of continuous cooling at cryogenic temperatures. One exemplary aspect involves a refrigeration system that includes: a chamber adapted to hold liquid and gaseous coolant received from a cooling pot; a first adsorption pump having an inlet end in fluid communication with the chamber, the first adsorption pump configured to capture gas from the liquid and gaseous coolant when the first adsorption pump is enabled; a second adsorption pump having an inlet end in fluid communication with the chamber, the second adsorption pump configured to capture gas from the liquid and gaseous coolant when the second adsorption pump is enabled; a means for desorbing the gas captured by the first adsorption pump; and a means for desorbing the gas captured by the second adsorption pump.

There is provided a mounting structure for mounting a cryocooler cold head on a vacuum vessel. The cold head includes a cold head-side cooling stage and a cold head-side flange. The mounting structure includes a cold head accommodation sleeve installed in the vacuum vessel and including a sleeve-side cooling stage which comes into thermal contact with the cold head-side cooling stage by coming into physical contact with the cold head-side cooling stage, and a sleeve-side flange to be coupled to the cold head-side flange, an inter-flange distance adjustment mechanism configured to adjust a distance between the sleeve-side flange and the cold head-side flange so that the cold head-side cooling stage and the sleeve-side cooling stage are physically brought into contact with each other or brought into a contactless state therebetween, and a flange fastening mechanism configured to fasten the cold head-side flange to the sleeve-side flange.
