An automatic spherical ice maker includes an upper stationary ice mold having at least one ice cavity with a hemispherical shape, and a lower rotatable ice mold having at least one ice cavity with a hemispherical shape and corresponding to the ice cavity of the upper stationary ice mold, so that together the at least one ice cavity of the upper stationary ice mold and the at least one cavity of the lower rotatable ice mold form at least one spherical mold which is configured to produce at least one substantially spherical ice ball at a time. The upper stationary ice mold has a first heating element and the lower rotatable ice mold has a second heating element, thereby to facilitate release of the at least one spherical ice ball from the at least one spherical mold.

A control unit is configured to control a movement of the plurality of mold parts with respect to the elongated elements to move the mold parts (3, 5) forming the mold (7) around the first elongated element (1) apart once a first ice column (201) has been formed in the mold (7), and form a mold (8) around a second elongated element (2) of the elongated elements. An ice remover (202) is configured to remove the first ice column (201).

The device is configured in a manner that a plurality of ice blocks may be formed. The device comprises a freezing reservoir that holds brine bath into which a plurality of ice cans may be lowered and filled with water for freezing using a specifically configured water-dispensing manifold. Once frozen, the device is configured in a manner to allow efficient removal of the ice cans from the brine bath, extraction of the ice block from the ice cans, and packaging of the ice block for long-term storage.

The ice rod is ejected from the heat exchanger and is converted into hail stones by a molding station downstream from the heat exchanger.
