Methods of producing clear ice shapes using suction, and apparatuses for performing same

An icemaker for making clear ice shapes using a process that removes and replenishes a freezable liquid, such as water, from and to one or more ice-mold cavities during freezing of the freezable liquid in the ice-mold cavity(ies). This process removes air bubbles from the freezable liquid during freezing that would otherwise result in cloudy ice. In some embodiments, the icemaker includes a suction system to draw freezable liquid from the cavity(ies) and a replenishment system to replenish the cavity(ies) with freezable liquid to replace the freezable liquid that the suction system draws out of the cavity(ies). In some embodiments, the replenishment includes a reservoir containing freezable liquid and the suction system includes a pump that draws the freezable liquid from the cavity(ies) and discharges it to the reservoir. Methods of making clear ice and other systems for making clear ice are also disclosed.

Icemaker assembly

An icemaker assembly includes a housing that defines a slot. A tray is operably coupled to the housing and defines a plurality of recesses. A duct is coupled to the housing and is disposed around the slot. The duct directs cool air along the tray. A fan is operably coupled to the housing at an acute angle relative to a planar extent of the tray. The fan and the duct evenly distribute cool air along the tray.

In an ice maker, a controller is operatively connected to the ice maker's water system to determine a parameter indicative of a total amount of water filtered by a replaceable filter cartridge. Based on the determined parameter, the controller can provide a numerical indication of the total amount of water filtered by the replaceable filter cartridge. Based on the determined parameter, the controller can determine that the replaceable filter cartridge requires replacement. The parameter can be determined based on the amount of time a water inlet valve is opened and/or a water pressure signal. The controller can take action when it determines that the water filter needs replacement, for example, by making a local alarm indication, pushing a remote notification, or making an automated purchase transaction for a new filter cartridge.

Refrigerator and control method therefor

A refrigerator according the present disclosure includes a first tray configured to form a portion of an ice making cell, a second tray configured to form another portion of the ice making cell and capable of moving relative to the first tray, a driver configured to move the second tray, a temperature sensor configured to sense the temperature of water or ice in the ice making cell, and a controller configured to control the driver, in which when it is determined that the water in the ice making cell is in a supercooled state based on the temperature measured by the tray temperature sensor, the controller may operate the driver to move the second tray.

Ice maker

An ice maker includes an evaporator configured to freeze water into ice as it flows vertically down a freeze plate. A distributor distributes the water along the top of the freeze plate to form ice across the width of the freeze plate as the water flows downward along the freeze plate. The distributor can be integrated into the evaporator. For example, the distributor and evaporator can have a part in common. The distributor can be formed from two pieces that come together to form the freeze plate. The distributor can have various features that aid in providing a desirable distribution of water along the width of the freeze plate. The freeze plate can be mounted in an ice maker enclosure in thermal communication with the evaporator and to slant forward.
