A smelting vessel includes a plurality of heat pipes (21) positioned in a refractory lining of at least a part of the hearth (9) for cooling at least a part of the refractory lining. At least one of the heat pipes includes (a) a liquid phase of a heat transfer fluid, typically water, in a lower section of the heat pipe and (b) a vapor phase of the heat transfer fluid, typically steam, in an upper section of the heat pipe. The heat pipe also includes a vent to allow vapour phase to escape from the heat pipe to reduce the pressure or the temperature within the heat pipe when the vapour pressure or the temperature in the heat pipe exceeds a predetermined threshold pressure or temperature.

A cooling assembly for cooling exhaust gases emitted from a steel-making furnace includes a plate configured to be coupled to the furnace. The plate has a first surface and an opposing second surface. The assembly includes a body having a defined length and a cross-sectional shape having a thickness defined between an outer surface and an inner surface thereof. The body includes a first mounting end and a second mounting end, where the first mounting end is mounted to the first surface at a first angle greater than 0°. The second mounting end is also mounted to the first surface at a second angle greater than 0°, and the second mounting end is spaced from the first mounting end. A conduit is defined between the inner surface and first surface for a cooling fluid to flow therethrough.

METHODS OF PROTECTING FURNACE ELECTRODES WITH COOLING LIQUID THAT CONTAINS AN ADDITIVE

A method for forming a protective antioxidative barrier on the furnace electrodes using a chemically altered cooling liquid containing an antioxidant additive. This method can be applied to electrodes used in electric arc furnaces and ladle metallurgy furnaces. The method can involve spraying the cooling liquid onto the electrode, thereby forming the protective antioxidative barrier and reducing the oxidation of the electrode.

Method and Apparatus for Acoustically Detecting Fluid Leaks

A system used in monitoring one or more operating parameters of a coolant-fluid cooled industrial installation includes one or more an acoustic sensors positioned to receive and sense one or more acoustic signals in an installation coolant-fluid flow. The acoustic sensor assembly operates to emit and sense acoustic signals at frequency ranges above and/or below the background noise frequency ranges which are associated with the normal industrial installation operation. Output data signals representative of sensed acoustic signals are compared to target frequency profiles predetermined as representing an acoustic frequency associated with a predetermined installation operating parameter or event.

Dynamic cooling of a metallurgical furnace

One embodiment is a cooling system for regulating temperature of a surface of a metallurgical furnace. The cooling system includes a plurality of spray conduits. Each spray conduit has one or more control valves and has a plurality of nozzles. A plurality of temperature sensors are disposed proximate the surface of the metallurgical furnace. A control system adjusts the control valves of the plurality of spray conduits in response to temperature information derived from the plurality of temperature sensors.
