Aerospike rocket motor assembly
A motor assembly is provided for use with projectiles, such as munitions, having relatively low length to diameter ratios. The motor assembly has an aerospike nozzle and a casing disposed about the aerospike nozzle, where interior aerospike volume contains propellant and where walls of both the cowl of the casing and of the aerospike nozzle jointly define a combustion chamber.
Device and method for launching an underwater projectile from a watercraft
A launching device and associated methods can be utilized to launch an underwater running body from a platform such as a watercraft. The launching device may include a ramp, which extends along a longitudinal ramp axis, and a propellant deflection unit. The ramp may enclose an underwater running body with a propulsion unit underwater. The launching device may activate the propulsion unit, which then emits a propellant. The propellant deflection unit deflects the emitted propellant into an outlet direction. This outlet direction of the propellant may be directed perpendicularly or obliquely away from the platform.
Missile canister gated obturator
Apparatus and methods relating to a missile canister that utilizes a variable obturator assembly. The variable obturator assembly can include a plurality of gates that adjust based upon canister pressure at a base plate. In a maximum pressure situation experienced during successful missile egress from the canister, one or more of the gates can open in response to canister flyout pressure so as to increase flow area through the base plate, thereby reducing canister pressure. In a restrained firing scenario, the plurality of gates remain closed thereby preventing missile exhaust gases from flow up past the base plate which could lead to heating of a rocket motor and warhead. The variable obturator assembly can have multiple individual gates that are mounted to the base plate with a hinge assembly, with the gates held in a closed position against the base plate with a spring assembly.

APPARATUS FOR VEHICLE LAUNCH, RECOVERY, STORAGE AND TRANSPORT
An apparatus for launching, recovering, transporting, and storing vehicles is disclosed. The apparatus stabilizes the vehicle while it is in operation or inactive and has a frame connected to at least one stabilizer. In certain configurations, the apparatus stabilizes the vehicle without using the vehicle's onboard landing gear.

Gas gun launcher
A gas gun launcher has a pump tube and a launch tube with a first end of the launch tube slidably inserted into a second end of the pump tube. The pump tube may hold a heat exchanger to heat a light gas used to launch a vehicle. A sliding seal can be employed to manage recoil and to retain the gas within the launch tube and the pump tube. A fast-closing muffler at the second end of the launch tube can conserve the light gas utilized for launching a vehicle, enabling the light gas to be recycled. A launch tube alignment system is preferably automatic, ensuring the survival of the launch vehicle.
Vertical launch system (VLS) including heavy inert gas insulating layers
Heavy inert gas insulation layers are provided for one or more components of a launch system for a plurality of missiles. The layer may be integrated into the walls of the components or provided in inserts attached to the components. An inert gas fills a sealed void space in the walls or the insert. The inert gas has a density of at least 1.5 Kg/m.sup.3 and a thermal conductivity (Tcond_gas) of no greater than two-thirds of a thermal conductivity of air (Tcond_air) to form the heavy inert gas insulation layer. The inert gas may be Argon, Krypton, Xenon or a synthetic gas and is suitably held at a pressure of 760 Torr (1 atmosphere) or greater at sea level. The heavy inert gas insulation layer delays desensitization or inhibits premature reaction of the energetic materials inside the missiles due to high external temperatures. The insulation layers allow for more compact and dense configurations of the launch system and missiles.
VACUUM INSULATED VERTICAL LAUNCH SYSTEM (VLS)
Vacuum insulation layers are provided for one or more components of a launch system for a plurality of missiles. The vacuum insulation layers may be integrated into the walls of the components or provided in inserts attached to the components. A medium or high vacuum is pulled on a sealed void space in the walls or the insert. The vacuum insulation layer provides a thermal conductivity (Tcond_vac) of less than one-third of a thermal conductivity of air (Tcond_air). The vacuum insulation layer delays desensitization or inhibits premature reaction of the energetic materials inside the missiles due to high external temperatures. The insulation layers allow for more compact and dense configurations of the launch system and missiles.
