Process for producing a polymer tape from a powder

The invention relates to a process for the production of a non-fibrous drawn polymer tape, said process comprising the steps: a) compacting a polymer powder in a press to form a compacted polymer bed; b) calendering said compacted polymer bed to form an oriented polymer tape; and c) drawing said oriented polymer tape to form a highly oriented polymer tape; characterized in that step a) comprises compacting the polymer powder at a temperature and pressure such that from 0.1 to 20 wt. % of the polymer powder as measured by DSC is melted. The invention also relates to a tape obtainable by the above process, and a monolayer, multilayered material sheet and ballistic resistant article comprising such a tape.

FIBER COMPOSITES HAVING STRENGTH AND FLEXIBILITY, SYSTEMS, AND METHODS THEREOF
20230152061 · 2023-05-18 ·

Systems and techniques to provide a flexible, lightweight material that is also effective at protecting a body from ballistic threats are described. An example composite material described herein is fiber-based, and it includes one or more first regions where the fiber composite material is consolidated, and one or more second regions where the fiber composite material is unconsolidated. Example methods of manufacturing the composite material disclosed herein include using a specialized tool with a heated platen press or an autoclave. The tool may include one or more protrusions and/or cavities that contact a precursor composite material to transform the precursor material into a partially consolidated fiber composite material, which is suitable for use as body armor, among other potential applications for the manufactured composite material.

Personal tactical system with integrated ballistic frame

Implementations described and claimed herein provide a personal tactical system configured to be worn by an individual for protection against threats. In one implementation, the personal tactical system includes one or more internal components disposed in an interior formed by an outer layer and an inner layer. The internal components include a flexible body armor, a ballistic plate, a ballistic frame, and/or a ballistic plate cover. The ballistic frame further includes an electrical system coupled to the frame body, the electrical system including one or more ports in communication with at least one of electrical or communication lines.

Deployable origami-inspired barriers

An example barrier can be switchable between an at least partially collapsed state and at least partially expanded state (e.g., a deployed state). For example, the barrier can be formed from a continuous sheet and a plurality of rigid sections (e.g., rigid panels) attached or incorporated into the continuous sheet. The barrier can also include a plurality of hinges, such as hinge lines, between the panels that are formed from the continuous sheet. The hinges enable the barrier to be rigid foldable (e.g., the hinges can fold and unfold while the rigid sections remain stiff and rigid) between the expanded and collapsed states.

LIGHTWEIGHT COMPOSITE ARMOR

A composite armor includes a ceramic substrate defining a frontside opposite a backside, where a thickness is defined extending between the frontside and the backside. A first tension-wrapped thermoplastic composite overwind is wrapped around the ceramic substrate about the frontside and backside. A first portion of the first overwind overlaps a second portion of the first overwind. The first and second portions of the first overwind are fixedly attached to one another utilizing a first localized heating. The first overwind includes a first tensile pretension. A backing is disposed about the backside of the ceramic substrate attached to the first overwind. The ceramic substrate has a higher modulus of elasticity in comparison to the overwind. The first overwind has a higher modulus of elasticity in comparison to the backing.
